Appearance is a brownish copper with a half finger of off-white head that dissipated at a fairly steady pace. The nose has mild chocolate notes. While I would not necessarily describe the body as “thin,” I would certainly say that it is not as full-bodied as other doppelbocks. The flavor profile focuses on malty sweetness, which particularly comes out as the offering warms. The alcohol is rather well hidden on this one.

my first beer from these guys, always stoked to try out new places, so i was pumped to share a bottle of this with my friend while back east. equal parts brown and orange in color, with a slightly under powered off white head that has big patchy lace but never really firms up enough to stick around. plenty of haze to this, but mostly settling out to a light opaqueness. a nose of cocoa powder transfers to the taste too, where its especially prominent on the front end, but also the last thing i taste after the swallow. lots of darker german type grains giving both body and fermentables, and the whole thing shakes out pretty grainy. the chocolate part is nice because it doesnt add a lick of sweetness to a style that sometimes gets very sweet. its bitterness by contrast, and provides nice balance. the yeast doesnt do much for me, and neither does the alcohol strength, which comes out a little sloppily hot, definitely ramping up as it warms. i think its a clever and interesting take on the style, but could probably use a few tweaks to get it dialed in. impressive first brew for me from them though, and i will look for more as i venture back towards pennsylvania in the future.
