this is suspiciously similar to every other kirin beer in most categories. looks, smells and tastes boring. not disgusting, but only about as much character as a good happoshu.

there's really no point in describing this in greater detail. it's a japanese euro pale lager made by kirin, and that about sums it up. interesting that it's in a green bottle though, and hard to find. not at grocery stores, only some little sake shops. i will not get this anymore, and i will suggest perhaps kirin is the worst macro in japan. at least it was cheap.

The first good beer from Kirin that I tried.

Appearance - Golden-brown with a thick froth.

Smell - Lots of wheat up front with some hop in the background.

Taste - Very grainy. You an definitely taste the wheat and malt in there. Some hops in the finish but you mostly get the wheat taste.

Mouthfeel - Pretty smooth and has some body to it.

Drinkability - It's what a beer should be like. It doesn't bore you and you want more.

Recommended for those who have never been to Tochigi Prefecture to try it in the local restaurants there.

Heartland Beer (all it says) by Kirin

Pours a medium straw yellow with a short lived white coarse head. Aroma is all skunk, can't really pick up much else. Well, maybe some slight grain, delicate hop, and an almost fishy smell. The nose on this beer is not really inviting at all. Typical of green bottled beers (Heineken et all), they are typically skunky. Flavor isn't as disappointing, with a thin to moderate mouthfeel, and a light skunkiness that is balanced a a delicate sweet maltiness. Hops aren't really present on the nose or the palate. Not really a beer to be enjoyed by itself, most likely something that would pair well with certain types of food. Probably won't be picking this up again.

The fact is, Heartland is not fantastic, but I think it's getting a bum rap on this site. And I think having it on tap instead of from the bottle helps, too.

A: The same pale golden color Japanese beers always have, like they were taught that beer was all supposed to be that color. The head on the tap was very thick and very solid. It dissipated slower than other Japanese beers, although there was no lacing to speak of.

S: Not much of one... A tiny bit of nondescript fruitiness if you really breathed hard.

T: There's more flavor in the finish than the beer itself, but the finish is the same flowery, peachy hop flavor found in the "Frozen Hop" used to make Kirin's Sparkling Hop, my favorite Dai-San.

M: I thought it was almost satiny drinking it from the tap, and the carbonation had just a little tiny bite.

D: Well, I'd take it over a lot of other Japanese beers and I could definitely down more than a couple if the situation arose.

The head disappeared very quickly and let the very watery transparent golden color body alone with its big bubbles. The smell was grainy. A high level of carbonation, refreshing citrus. Crazy graininess in the taste, but still pretty tasty with sweet notes of grapefruit. A dry hoppiness for the finish. Quite drinkable.

Had a few bottles of this at the Heartland bar at the base of the Roppongi Hills complex in Tokyo.

In most ways, this reminds me of something like Heineken or Beck's. Overly fizzy-carbonated, pale yellow in colour, served cold with no head at all. No aroma to speak of, other than a little bit of skunk. Less grainy than some other macros, which at least makes it mildly drinkable. Bottle is kinda cool looking, even if it is green.

Served in a classic green 500ml bottle, with the Heartland emblem etched into the bottle: an (oak?) tree within a diamond and the inscription: "In every spirit & every season, everywhere BEER".

Ingredients are: malts and hops

The appearance is average with a medium-long lasting white head over a gold body. The smell reflects a decent hop presence and is noticeably sweet, which continues through in the taste--sweet enough to have flashes of grape juice. Crisp entrance, which drops to a sweet, medium-bodied malt/fruitiness, and concludes in a light, sweet hop finish.

This beer is quite hard to find I believe, and I've only seen it at a few liquor stores, despite being a Kirin product. It gets points for the cool bottle and for being Kirin's best brew I've tasted.

I've had this on numerous occasions since being in Japan, normally at large catered parties at restaurants. Comparatively to other pale lagers, this Kirin brew has an exceptionally pleasant aroma that comes off the glass smelling of crisp hops and herbs. The mouthfeel and taste are nothing to be excited about, but not at all unpleasant. For the price and for the size of the bottle, this Heartland brew is an excellent choice. I am looking forward to bringing one or two of these out to the cherry blossom viewing coming up in a month or two and enjoying them out in the park. A great afternoon drink for when you are snacking or just don't want to get plastered before the evening.

The selling point of this beer is that it is made with 100% barley malt and 100% aroma hops.

Pale yellow body, Tight white head. Chill haze.

There is next to no hop aroma despite the use of 100% aroma hops. Flakey biscuit aroma.

Tastes similar to a Becks, only a tad sweeter.

The bottled version is more of the same, however, as it is served in green bottles it has a ganja/skunk smell to it. In contrast to the other reviewers, I believe this beer should have points detracted for using a bottle susceptible to skunking.

I bought this bottle at a supermarket in Utsunomiya Japan. I was cautious due to the green glass bottle but wanted something new to bring on the shinkansen to Tokyo. Unfortunately this beer was skunked, much like a Becks or Heineken Euro lager that's been sitting under the lights for a while. Under the skunk there was a faint aroma that seemed to indicate some moderate hops (and there was also a little burn in taste, maybe some hops bitterness). The body is about standard for a lager, probably not a bad beer if not skunky as Kirin makes consistent (if a little tepid) products. Paired with raw horse meat on a bullet train, Japan high life.

The green bottle is intriguing with no labels save the obligatory legalize on a small sticker around the top of the neck. It'll be good for my collection.

Most aspects of this offering remind me of a typical Kirin or Corona without the lemon slice crammed in. I probably should be eating something beside sesame bread the cleanse my palate (though it goes well with that). A nice Japanese barbecue with kalbi and beef tongue grilled next to buttered roast garlic and assorted veggies would help this beer.

It did have a good price for its size--but that might just be me having it available here in Japan.

I bought this beer a couple of days ago in a supermarket in Yokohama. It was the first time to see this beer and the unusual green bottle attracted me to it. The absence of any information on the bottle was also interesting.

I am not a great lover of Kirin beers so I was pleasantly surprised at this one. If you are looking for a light beer that goes well with most foods/snacks this would be it. I noticed it had a slight fruity taste that was not unpleasant and I believe would appeal to those who are not so interested in strong tastes or aromas.

I can't say it is one of the great beers in my life but I would not hesitate to drink it again.

Appearance: Clear gold brew with a sudsy white head.

Smell: Herbal hop aroma, very clean.

Taste: Good flavor. Nice hop bite, but it has a contrasting sweetness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light body. Smooth and clean finish. Very compact.

Drinkablity: Good brew. I would have this again. A good interpretation of the style.
