Brilliantly clear beer, straw in color, without any head.
Virtually no aroma to be found here.

Slightly spicy flavor, most notably grainy & slight malty taste.

Light bodied, crisp and refreshing but mostly uneventful beer.

It's underwhelming and un-remarkable. If its the only game in town go for it, otherwise your better off trying something with more flavor.

The best thing about drinking this beer would be some spicy food or a sweltering hot day.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. Label has the mythical Kirin on the front, half deer and half dragon, bringer of good fortune. Bottled on date on the back.

Appearance: Pale golden, slightly hazy with a foamy crisp white head. Falls to a thin lace with some stick.

Smell: Faint sulfur, light musty raw grain and foral aroma.

Taste: Slightly bitty, creamy mouthfeel, light body. Hop bitterness strikes first as a weak tea-like citrus flavour (lemony) with a slight raw hop flavour and twang. Malt is nearly non-existent with a light dextrin sweetness and some dry grain flavours that lend to the crispness of the brew. Finishes with residual hop rawness that coats the palate, metallic notes and some grain husk dryness.

Notes: A run of the mill lager. Certainly not impressive, but also not revolting. A very commercial example of a modern day American Lager. I must admit that it pairs extremely well with sushi -- so it's true, each beer has its time and place.

12 oz brown long neck bottle with an A&B “Bottled On” date on the back label. Brewed by Anheuser-Busch in the US. Problematic head retention but the clarity is fine and throws a pale yellowish hue.

A “too clean” aroma of faint grain and cereal addjunk(rice).

Astringent up the ying yang with a huge drying husk flavour, not a taste that you want at all. Hops are there but placid in flavour and bitterness is very processed.

Here is my Enlgish-Haiku review:

This beer brings me pain
The taste hurts from tongue to mind
Down the drain it goes

Bottled on date of 10-2-03
Pours light straw, with a white head. Bit of hops in nose, not much else. Very Light bodied lager, high carbonation. Not much malt, hops, or flavor. Some nasty off flavors, apple/cotton candy. Tried this one at my local sushi place, I'd have a bud or miller next time, this stuff is nasty.

On tap in pint glass.

Appearance: Yellow color with about one finger of white head, some lacing left on the glass.

Smell: Banana, mostly. Maybe some malts and rice.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth light bodied. Taste like banana and rice, at least that is the best way I can describe it.

Overall: Not a bad beer, goes well with hibachi and sake.

Poured almost clear, a little yellow coloring, big head, withers away quickly. No aroma other than hydraulic fluid and metal.

Taste, more metal, and that's about it. Metal water. No hops, lots of carbonation. This stuff is $7 a 6 pack, are you kidding me? They charge less for water at concerts or sporting events. A decent beer with food I guess, if you don't want to have anything competing flavor wise with the food.

Pale color, big bubbled head that splits in an instant. Very weak in most categories, head, color, flavor. Watery to the extreme, though I taste no corn characteristics. But with such little malt flavor, it might benefit from a little sweetness. It is dry but the hops are uninteresting. I had a lot of Kirin's in Japan as well and it doesn't come off well there, either, IMO...

Appearance: Light straw yellow tone with a white fizzy head leaves minmial lacing, sorry looking lager. Aroma: Grainy corn and rice combo with some husky offness with a touch of hops should be clean and fresh smelling like a nice crisp lager should be. Taste: Grainy huskiness along with the corn and rice adjuncts not what I was looking for when dining Japanese, is drinkable but the flavors didn't work for me. Mouthfeel: Thin bodied fizzy carbonation doesn't satisfy me. Drinkability: Well, yeah I will probably never give this one another shot much rather settle for a Sapporo before this one.

The same as the Ichiban, but even less interesting, no flavour, easy to drink, boring for us beer freaks, not that great a beer.

This might be the palest beer I've seen yet; if not, it's pretty close. Some style (Kolsch comes to mind) are quite pale but have plenty of substance, but this just looks watery. It does have some color, a white-yellow hue. The head, clean and white, is never more than foam but does keep that. It also manages very light spotting.
Raw grains, almost harsh, an earthy must, some rice and a whiff of grass are all I get in the nose.
Some herbal leaf minerality under a bite of grains with an oddly astringent note hit the tongue. There's a little tanginess to it, though it's mildly sweet as well. It's extremely light, but it's so far from clean as to be harsh, and some corn husk isn't exactly vegetal but doesn't help the astringent aspect. If anything, there's a sort of almost sulfuric taste, something more noticeable than in the aroma.
The feel isn't as bad as the flavor would portend; it actually feels less harsh and grainy than it tastes, which is unusual. It dries out much too hard for a light-bodied beer, though, and despite a thin texture it's fairly bright. It certainly is crisp, at least.

Poured that yellow, urine color which always gives me a sense of foreboding. The head vanished without a trace in less than a second. I was impressed here. This one's got read Houdini head.

Tastes horribly astringent, with a slightly bitter finish. Much more flavor than your average mass-produced lager, which I value, even if it's an odd, tangy, mildly unpleasent flavor. Better than than no flavor at all. We're not talking about a vodka here.

In 2/3rds of the sushi bars I've ever been in, your beer choices are confined to this, and Sapporo. Drink the Sapporo. It's not great, but it's better than this.

Although this is brewed by Anheuser-Busch in Los Angeles, they must be sticking to the actual Kirin guidelines as this beer is far below their normal quality.

Its slightly hazy golden body is topped by a decent-sized head of creamy white foam that diminishes shortly but leaves some thin lace in its wake. The nose displays some lager yeast sulphur over a bit of grainy malt and a drop of floral hoppiness. The body is light, and it's gently crisp with a fine and median carbonation before warming to become slightly creamy across the palate. But apart from its sulphur constituent, the flavor is not much different than most mass-produced American lagers. Its lightly grainy, but obviously adjunct-influensed, character is balanced by a firm bitterness and some dull, leafy, herbal, and grassy hops. It finishes short and dry - almost like a light beer! There's not alot going on here.

I've got to question the brewery: the bottle I'm holding says Anheuser-Busch, L.A. Cali. The bottle has a bottled on date. The beer looks every thing like an American macro-lager. Head collapsed into soap suds within a few seconds. Tastes like Bud Dry. Awful.

When poured, this brew had a small white head that consisted of small bubbles that completely diminished. There was a fair amount of lacing with this brew. The body was clear and the hue was yellow. It had a light hoppy and fruity aroma along with a bitter flavor from start to finish.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into bar glass.

A: Clear, very pale gold color. Thin white head.

S: Light grainy smell. Nothing much else.

T: Metallic tasting. Very watery. Not much flavor.

M: Thin, like water.

D: Easy to drink, however nothing that you would actually want to drink.

When the choice at the sushi place is Kirin or Sapporo, I'm choosing Sapporo. Or actually I think I'm choosing the iced tea. Iced tea and sushi really go great together and it tastes so much better than this.

Goodbye Hong Kong. Hello Tokyo. Time to try a few Japanese beers on my travels. Poured from an 11.2 oz. can. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is very mild, a touch of malts. Taste is light, some malts, rather bland and boring. Feels light in the mouth and overall, while nothing offensive, just left me wanting more.

the only beer left at shogun i had night tried, had this when i went out to dinner with my wife a couple weeks ago.

super light in every aspect i swear it poured out almost clear with no color at all. aroma is pure light rice and corn with just a hint of something stale or off in the back, but seriously soo light nothing was really noticeable. the taste was ore of the same, soo light i could not even tell it was there. gone in a flash i had this one down in no time.

overall just not even a beer to me, i not compliment dinner and was more just a waste of 3 bucks.

Label notes that it is brewed "under the supervision of Kirin's brewmaster." Hey, Brewmaster, wake up! Weak and watery.

Free leftovers... I feel better than I didn't buy this. More golden in color than the Ichiban, which I thought was more tolerable. This one had a weird biting acidic smell, then a simialer taste. No really positive tastes. Mostly some acidic finish tastes, very harsh. (Is it the rice ?) I didn't care for it. If presented with a choice, I prefer the Ichiban. Owned by AB, but tried not to let that influence the tasting.

On the pour a crystal clear bright gold color, the head impressive in size, white in color with decent lace to coat the glass. Malt nose, clean and crisp the front is sweet, top skimpy. Finish is hop spicy, middling in its acidity, droughty aftertaste, drinkable as “Lagers” go, but not a real hit me, but then nine out of ten lagers/pils elicit that reaction from this old Stout and Belgian strong lover. I think these bad boys have corrupted my “Buds” as in taste.

Pours a medium golden color with a decent off-white head, lots of carbonation, decent broken lace . Aroma is grainy with some skunkiness. Taste begins with mild malt sweetness and citrus hops, towards the middle the flavor turns to an astringent medicinal bitterness, finish is harshly metallic and lingering. Not much to like here, I'm afraid.

Born on date is 21-Aug-02, so alas, this is a resonably fresh sample.

I know that this beer gets very low reviews, but when you look at the intent of the beer, being a easy drinkable beer, without too much body, this is a good beer.
It pours a golden color with a small head and little carbonation. Smell reminded me of vegetables and rice, with a slight metallic taste. In the background some maltiness.
Taste was bland, some maltiness and very little bitterness. For the rest not much taste, not even when the beer warms.

Kirin Lager brewed under contract by A-B in the US and imported into Canada is nothing special, but is not a bad brew, is just not rreally all that good either..
Apperance is very nice, medium light colour, medium head, nice lace with exceptional glass cling..
Sadly it goes downhill from there..body is weak, taste is mildly of the hops and wanting..leaves you asking "whats next" please?

My expectations was low on this one as I've seen earlier reviews on it, I just had to try it out of that cause. Could it really be that bad? Unfortunately it could, it is bad, even though I had ultra low expectations.

It pours clear yellow, like any lager. Poor, big bubbly head that you can hear crackle loudly like coco pops or what ever cereal... The head is gone after 60 secs. No lace.

No smell. Oh wait, there is some smell here...hmm...I think it smells...hmm..beer?

A bit sweet tasting, slightly slightly bitter, but not much really. The mouth feel is quite watery, no carbonation either.

This is the genuine article, brewed in Japan, and is 5% abv.

This pours a clear straw colour with a fluffy white head that drops away quickly.

Normal boring clean aromas that you expect from Japanese macro. Slight bit of sulphur.

The palate is the same as the aroma. Clean and boring. Nothing offensive.

Thin in the mouth.

There's nothing really wrong with this other than it's boring.
