Highly agitated head, mostly larger bubbles with no real retention, like soufflé about to fall, down to the surface swiftly, no lacing to speak of. The liquid is a light amber orange hue, on the whole clear, can’t imagine more bubbles crammed inside a glass, looks like someone put an air hose into it. The nose is musty like stale attic air, cardboard (not the corked kind of smell), mutter of earth and wet wood, close to no fruit nor citrus presence, inert. Medium-bodied, here the oak offers both toast and vanillin creaminess and throws off the, whole mouth entry, lurches. Some apricot to plum/prune flavors, orange marmalade, no conviction to them. Has an odd syrupy texture, more so because it’s not like it is gluing any flavor to your palate. The carbonation is high and there tends to be more random big “pops” than a steady prickle. The sourness gets lost in the staleness. Did not come close to finishing the bottle.

an extra from a trade from some point in time...not sure how old or fresh this is. decent saison, barrel gives it a vinous quality. little vinegary. but again not sure how old.

Smells great but bland. Unique difficult to describe mild flavor but would pass.

This pours a hazy golden in color. I get a estery funky aroma, with some citrusy notes and a bit of citrus peel. The flavor has a subdued citrus nuance, with a pleasantly tart finish. I’m realizing that my notes don’t do it justice here…

12oz bottle of indeterminate vintage. Served in a snifter glass 1/1/2015.

A- Hazy orange body, two finger white head with low retention time and longevity. Not much lacing, finishes off relatively placid.

S- Ech. A bit of rotten orange, oak and yeasty mineral flavours. I would be more convinced based off of the smell that this is a white wine barrel aged beer, but apparently it is Cabernet in origin. Not getting a lot of the white wine tannins. In fact, there is a decent amount of butterscotch which isn't really a flavour that I expect to find here.

F- Oranges, lemon zest, a mild bit of passion fruit sweetness with a stolid biscuit-heavy malt. It's not particularly sweet, but it's not particularly sour either. Balanced and drinkable, but that's the best I can say about it. There is an odd herbal aftertaste which is strange for me.

M- Medium bodied, dry, crisp and refreshing which is nice. However, the weird aftertaste of this tends to limit my willingness to drink the entire glass.

O- Weird beer, definitely drinkable but also reasonably forgettable. Worth trying, I suppose, but I wouldn't go out of your way to try this.

Final score: 3.34

This is a delightful beer, complex, deliciously fruity and tart yet balanced by a desirable amount of sweetness, and very brett funky. It is interesting that with cabernet barrel aging, the beer ends up with so much of an orange flavor. I think that must be coming from hops, my guess would be Citra.
