This is easily one of the best smelling rum barrel aged imperial stouts I have ever had, I just wish the taste followed the smell. The taste was a little lacking in mouthfeel and even had a slight metallic taste. This was a good beer overall

Poured from a waxed 750 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big two finger tan head which slowly fades into a thinner creamy layer. Leaves some good lacing.

Smell: A rich, roasty, and sweet dark malt driven aroma with good hints of chocolate, coffee, and rum. Dark roasted barley malt with big hints of dark chocolate, coffee, cream, vanilla, toast, biscuit, caramel, toffee, oats, and yeast. Sweet hints of molasses and cane sugar. Solid barrel presence with fairly boozy hints of rum, wood, and oak. Spice hints of anise, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Dark fruit hints of raisin, prune, and fig. Hops are pretty light. A very good smell.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a nicely rich, roasty, and sweet dark malt forward taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, rum, and fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with good notes of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cream, toasted bread, biscuit, toffee, caramel, oats, and yeast. Good barrel notes of rum, oak, and wood. Sweet taste of cane sugar and molasses. Notes of anise licorice along with some light nutmeg and cinnamon. Dark fruit undertones with notes of fig, raisin, cherry, and prune. Subtle earthy hops in the background. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, slick, and somewhat syrupy. Some booze heat is felt but it feels smoother than expected.

Overall: A great spin on a barrel aged stout. The rum barrel and sugar add a good kick without making things a boozy, overly sweet mess. Rich and nicely refined.

Served from a 750mL bottle into a snifter.

Viscous and oily in color and appearance, a chewy cappuccino-frothy head forms. It's substantial in height and mass and lingers for quite some time over the oil slick body. Beautiful. 5

Barrel-heavy aroma offers oak, fresh tobacco, sweet vanilla and caramel. Light bourbon notes and faint booze and chocolate. Maybe too much barrel aroma and not enough base beer but it smells great. 4.25

The barrel presence is pronounced on the palate, giving the tobacco, oak and bourbon-y spice the nose had. There's also a noticeable sweet and sugary flavor that is in fact subtler than the booze and barrels. The finish especially lingers with the earthy taste of barrels and cane sugar. The deeper I get into this beer the more it starts tasting if coconut. 4.25

Smooth, creamy and medium- to heavy-bodied mouthfeel with a slightly residual sweetness feel. The booze can feel potent or mellow from sip to sip but never becomes offensive. 4.25

Just a day earlier I ran through a number of BA beers with friends, many which had big-time hype or world-class reputations, and this tastes on par with the best of those.

22oz waxed bottle poured into Snifter

A: deep rich black color with a fairly nice head of a chocolate semi whitish head that sits nicely

S: Rum, raisins, toffee, vanilla a slight bit of oak

T: Very oaky barrel taste with a deep rich roast and some hints of leather with raisin and a little rum nice lingering taste of sugary rum

M: Not super thick but definitely full and lush especially for a barrel aged beer

O: This beer is astonishingly good I would have never thought the rum would compliment the base beer so well but it's just clicking on all levels nice sharp and roasty IS taste then very beautiful barrel tastes of rum and sugars
