Poured from a waxed 750 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big two finger tan head which slowly fades into a thinner creamy layer. Leaves some good lacing.

Smell: A rich, roasty, and sweet dark malt driven aroma with good hints of chocolate, coffee, and rum. Dark roasted barley malt with big hints of dark chocolate, coffee, cream, vanilla, toast, biscuit, caramel, toffee, oats, and yeast. Sweet hints of molasses and cane sugar. Solid barrel presence with fairly boozy hints of rum, wood, and oak. Spice hints of anise, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Dark fruit hints of raisin, prune, and fig. Hops are pretty light. A very good smell.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a nicely rich, roasty, and sweet dark malt forward taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, rum, and fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with good notes of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cream, toasted bread, biscuit, toffee, caramel, oats, and yeast. Good barrel notes of rum, oak, and wood. Sweet taste of cane sugar and molasses. Notes of anise licorice along with some light nutmeg and cinnamon. Dark fruit undertones with notes of fig, raisin, cherry, and prune. Subtle earthy hops in the background. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, slick, and somewhat syrupy. Some booze heat is felt but it feels smoother than expected.

Overall: A great spin on a barrel aged stout. The rum barrel and sugar add a good kick without making things a boozy, overly sweet mess. Rich and nicely refined.

Big thanks to Jeff for this one. 750ml capped bottle into a Cigar City snifter.

Pours a rich, 1 finger dark mocha colored head with great retention. Beer is opaque and pitch black. Lacing is thick and layered with excellent stick. An awesome and menacing looking brew.

Nose is a light booziness mixed with chocolate, roasted malt, liquorice and fudge. Pretty mellow.

Opens sweet and sticky. Molasses, dark fruit, cocoa powder, chocolate, fudge and brownie. Slightly bitter chocolate in the middle with some more cocoa powder and a touch of ashiness. End is molasses, wood and some fruity sweetness. Aftertaste is dark fruit and more cocoa. This is really good.

Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Slick and oily in the mouth and goes down smooth and rich. Messy finish with a surprisingly clean aftertaste. Really nice.

Really an awesome barrel-aged Imperial Stout and certainly one of the better Rum-aged beers I've had. Pretty under-the-radar and definitely worth seeking out.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black body. Nice khaki head. Great retention and great lacing inside the glass. Chunky collar.

Smell - Very boozy. Rum. Sharp oak. Chocolate. Kinda fruity.

Taste - Fudgy. Sharp oak. Rum and bright fruity sweetness in equal portions. Very boozy. The wood is almost harsh.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. Boozy. Medium carbonation.

Overall - It's a little tough to drink, but very flavorful. Rum barrels never quite do it for me.
