American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.40% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Regionally grown American pale malt is blended with rich European malt to produce a lighter bodied beer, bright in color, with a taut white head. Then there are the hops - four pounds per barrel to be exact. Willamettes, Cascades, CTZ, and Summits give this brew a citrus punch and spicy character.

Thanks to maximum12 for this one... he must know that I'm a sucker for canned pale ales. Half in the glass; the rest stays in the can for consumption. Half-murky, the color of the copper pipes in your basement, only a little dirtier and darker. A nice, creamy foam slowly settles on tap and leaves some impressive sheeting all along the glass as it transcends.

If the beer is half as good as the song... well, it'll be a doozy then. The aroma starts things off right, with a swift kick of pungent hops; lightly ashy and a bit herbal with some botanical-like citrus peel and deep grapefruit flesh wafting in the background somewhere. Leafy as well as fruity and even a bit juicy. Nice citric and spice mix, and good robustness for a mere pale ale.

The first sip stings with a much more abundant bitterness than the nose suggested; nearly tongue scraping and probably venturing into IPA levels of IBUs, but I'm okay with that. Herbaceous with lots of leaves topped with fresh, white pepper. Fresh and wet hops are colliding against all walls of my palate with each sip.

Citric notes are abundant as well, more so in a pith, peel, and bitter-inducing sense and not so much the "juicy sweet" sense as the nose may have previously led on with, but as I said, I don't have a problem with it. The bitterness isn't forcing me away, rather it's keeping things interesting. Understated malt, a touch of toast in the finish without much sweetness... in my opinion, that's how a pale ale/IPA is done.

Crisp, wet, and sparky finish; thin-medium bodied with tight, ample carbonation. Very surprised by this dark horse, here. Didn't see it coming at all. Listed as a pale ale, and while it may not be quite as drinkable or balanced as most pale ales (it's pushing the IPA boundaries), it's still tasty nonetheless, and even better because it's available in cans.

Serving glass: Poured from can into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Rich gold with nice white head, leaving minor lacing.

Smell: Citrusy, tropical and spicy. Don't smell much malt.

Taste: Extremely dried out toast and caramel malt base, with some graininess. Hops are huge for an APA, with grapefruit, orange, pine, spice and some light tropical notes. Finish is very bitter for an APA.

Feel: Moderately high carbonation, with a light, firm and crisp body. Finish is exceedingly dry, borderline sour. Perfect mouthfeel for the style - I wish more APAs nailed it this well.

Overall: Finally, a high quality year round APA from MN. I hope this is a massive success, and becomes the Furious of APAs. Of course, some may say this is really just a slightly lower abv IPA.

Poured from 12 oz. can into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass. Canned on 10/20/2012.

Appearance: Pours a deep copper amber orange with lots of rising bubbles. A solid three fingers of white head with good retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A really nice hop forward aroma. Big hints of citrus fruits including oranges, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, passion fruit, and lemon. Also some spicy and dank pine resin hops and a little grass. Some some pale malts along with hints of caramel, biscuit, and cracker. Its the hops that really shine here and are as vibrant as a fresh IPA would be. A ripe and really good aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints, a big hoppy taste with lots of citrus fruit esters and pine. Strong taste of citrus grapefruit, orange, pineapple, tangerine, lemon, and passion fruit. A surprisingly dank taste of pine resin spice and earthy grass. A bitter but fairly clean hop profile. In the background are some bready malts with notes of caramel, biscuit, and cracker. The hops are pretty dominate here as well. A very good juicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very juicy and somewhat sticky. Bitter, crisp, and clean with a very drying finish.

Overall: A really good Pale Ale from this new brewery. Very boldly hopped but still clean and easy drinking.
