American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.40% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Regionally grown American pale malt is blended with rich European malt to produce a lighter bodied beer, bright in color, with a taut white head. Then there are the hops - four pounds per barrel to be exact. Willamettes, Cascades, CTZ, and Summits give this brew a citrus punch and spicy character.

Beautiful glittering golden hue, slightly hazed, under a full flush of white foam.

Aroma: fresh, zesty, brimming with hops, bubbling over with citrus and pine, a vibrant, pithy nose, plumb with lemon and grapefruit.

Taste: Here's where it's getting good. We start with a slap of hops and a tickle of malt, and it never, ever quits. A fierce blast that tempers some in time, with malt succulent, soft, and supple, keeping the ground level, delivering a modicum of sweetness, providing a minimum of balance. Good and hoppy this one (though not out of bounds), and a remarkable drinker. Certainly a sessioner, with the continuing reward of hoppy goodness on the tongue.

Medium bodied, with a long, hoppy finish. The bitterness is high, and ever-present, and coupled with the malt flavor, it provide deliciousness. This is such an excellent pale ale, I'm finding it almost perfect. There's not a thing lacking, not a bit wrong, nothing to dishonor this ale. Like I said, these guys will have a hit on their hands.

Poured from a can sealed on 6/30/14 into an IPA glass and enjoyed over 25 minutes with and without pizza, salad, and wings.

The appearance is a rather hazy amber-cream that supports a thick cap of matching texture. Retention is good; thick sheets of lacing and stubborn islands on top make the head a part of the drinking experience deep into the glass.
Pine resin is powerful in the nose, accompanied by nice round fruit--honeydew, and papaya sprayed with lime. There's clover in there, too, dusted with pollen and sawdust. So much going on for an APA, but a bit imbalanced. With warming, it starts to smell more like yellow cake with blood-orange icing.
On the tongue, it starts almost toasty and smoky, then narrows down to a salted biscuit austerity before getting halfway through. Lemon zest pairs with the carbonation to open a late space for chewy hop oils to slide out from under pineapple and fade into a tart, dry finish. Higher temperature brings out too much tar, early and persistent in the flavor--so keep it cool and quaff unless you have barbecue or good fish to eat alongside.
In the mouth, it feels clean, rather juicy, and just nicely livened by the bubbles. Astringent on the tongue and hard palate; doesn't linger much anywhere else. With all those hops and possibilities for emergent flavor, I want it to hold on more...but then I remember I'm drinking a 5.4% APA and I simply reach for another smooth mouthful.
Eventually, I get beaten down by the bitterness of the aftertaste without food. But, it's a great match for eats that have any residual sugar or savory grill flavor. And on its own, it's still quite a creation--bursting with hops, layered with enough interesting flavor essences that I keep reaching for the glass. Although it wears a different label, I'd add this to my list of favorite session IPAs.
