Style | ABV
American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.40% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Regionally grown American pale malt is blended with rich European malt to produce a lighter bodied beer, bright in color, with a taut white head. Then there are the hops - four pounds per barrel to be exact. Willamettes, Cascades, CTZ, and Summits give this brew a citrus punch and spicy character.

If this is an APA then I'm Cookie Monster. This beer is hop heavy for any style and waaay too much for a pale ale.

Light copper color, mostly clear. Soapy head, nice lacing

Aroma is loaded with hops. Just shy of resin. Pine. Some citrus. Rustic vine. No malt to speak of

Flavor. Flavor? Not much underneath the massive hop bite. Pine and bitter orange peel.

This beer has far too much bite for its own good. It hides the flavor, but maybe that is the point.
To style this beer fails. Overall, it's a hop bomb with no balance

Slightly hazy lemon-amber with snowy trailers.
Stunning resin, papaya, pine sap and flower nectar nose.
Lean and salty Italian breadstick with huge lemon zest, nettle, Seville orange rind, and nectar hops.
Sugared grapefruit and pineapple end and severe bitter linger.
Clean, light more than medium, bone dry, slight cling.

Willamettes, Cascades, CTZ and Summits

Some fruit, some juice, but ultimately a clobberingly (for the strength, and for 45 IBUs too, actually) bitter citrus fest. In a way it’s a minor miracle that they managed to pack this amount of hops into a 5-ish% beer, and if I were looked for a true IPA at low ABV, this would be it. But at the same time, if I’m looking for 5% beer, do I want something this harsh? Doesn’t show the deft balance of Let It Ride, and so is a bit of a letdown (especially after that nose) that way.

An IPA in APA's clothing.

Appearance - Inch thick head. Golden orange color. Great lacing.

Smell - fruity citrus up front. nice biscuit finish.

Taste - maltiness up front and then lots of bitterness. not much citrus in between and then a nice malty finish

Mouthfeel - quite crisp and bitter

Overall - pretty decent pale ale and glad I got to try it.

Poured from a can (canned on 4/17/14) into a Bell's tulip. The beer is a murky burnt orange color with about a finger of off-white head. The nose has hints of grapefruit, marmalade, fresh toast, and a touch of bready sweetness.

Medium-light body with a firm feel and a balanced flavor. Some toast and marmalade notes up front and a nice hop explosion at mid-palate providing a nice rye-like spiciness that lingers a bit on the finish. Not as citrusy as I hoped it would be. More of an amarillo- or cascade-like hoppiness. Still, very refreshing and appetizing.

Very nice beer. Reminds me a bit of Sierra Nevada's classic Pale Ale, but with a slightly more pronounced malt backbone. Not my favorite style, but darn tasty.

Poured from a can (canned on 4/17/14) into a Bell's tulip.

A - Dark rusty orange color with big 3 finger off white head. Thick collar and excellent plush lacing.

S - Good notes of citrus, grapefruit, pine, caramel and bred.

T - Bready with some caramel sweetness that transforms into a hop whallup on the palate. Not as citrusy, but there are notes of pine and grapefruit. Classic west coast style with a good malt backbone.

M - Medium to light body with good carbonation and a bitter, resinous finish.

O - Terrific canned IPA that is very west coast in style with the hops and malts that are used. Easy drinker with great flavor.
