Poured from a 12 oz can into a glass mug. Gifted to me by my brother Greg. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pitch black with 1-finger of cappuccino colored head with decent retention and a nice cap of lacing.

S: Very roasty with grapefruit and pine hoppiness -- the malt and hops don't work together that well.

T: The flavor is a little better, but still the overly roasty nature of the dark malt and the highly resinous, pine and grapefruit hop flavors clash and leave a very weird, lightly astringent aftertaste.

M: Medium body, a little chalky with a little too much carbonation.

O: Midnight Ryder is far cry from Day Tripper which blew me away. This black IPA is too roasty which to my palate clashes with the resinous hoppiness. I qualify this review by saying I am not the biggest black IPA fan.

Appearance: Pint glass. Pours a solid black with a finger of tan, creamy-looking head.

Aroma: Roasted malts, chocolate, some hops.

Taste: Plenty of hop bitterness, pleasantly balanced with roasted malt flavors. Sweet chocolate and roasted flavors in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, medium carbonation. Easy to drink.

Overall: Really enjoyable beer, I really like the American Black Ale style. I'm worried that the six pack I bought was not terribly fresh; hop flavors seemed a bit muted from I was expecting. Will try to find another, definitely fresh six pack and revisit my review at that time.

A. Black. Thick brown head. Slow fading.

S. Pine resin. Floral/weedy. Roasted malts. Caremel. Even a little smokiness. Pretty nice.

T. Roasted, burnt even, malts. Some caramel and toffee. A light citrus tang. But the main flavor here is the blistering hoppy bitterness. Chalky almost. Bitterness lingers. And lingers.

M. Medium. Has a backbone but not super rich. Feels lke a well balanced IPA.

O. This is unique brew. It's more bitter, not hoppier, but bitter than most IPAs yet it has a nice porter-like smoke to it. All in all, I enjoy this. Don't love it and can't have much more than one at a time.

A: Black with a huge, frothy, steady, bread-loaf-looking head; pretty nice lacing; this beer looks fantastic

S: Piney, resinous hops mingle well with chocolate; slightly roasted malts; a touch of toffee and perhaps caramel

T: Pine and citrus hops up front followed by chalky chocolate with some slight roasted malt flavors; it finishes fairly balanced but dry and a bit of some coffee flavors

F: Medium body and fairly sticky; a touch thin on the back end

O: A nice beer from a new-to-me brewery; it doesn't quite come together but it works out pretty well
