Thanks to Ungertaker for this!

Pours a near black, slight brown hues around the edges remind me that this is dark, dark brown not black. An inch of brown creamy head quickly settles in to athin crescent moon shape around the glass. Faint spots are left on the glass, just enough to make the glass look dirty instead of reminding me that there should me some sticky lacing left behind.

This one smells sweeter than it tastes. Big malty aromas rise from the glass with a touch of roasted bitterness lingering behind. Piney resin cuts thru the malty sweetness on the nose leaving a dry yet sticky feeling behind.

Mouthfeel is a touch thinner than I would like it to be, but I'm no expert on what should be and what shouldn't be. Sticky resin coats the cheeks while a dry burnt pine needle taste is left behind.

The alochol is hidden behind the bitter notes very well. Finishes cleaner than expected, almost like a lager than a ale. Would recommend and gladly drink again.

Brown-edged black into the glass, plenty of head on top and lots of lasting lacing in the glass. Good coverage, with long lasting head retention.

Roasty coffee aroma, with an undercurrent of green herbal hops. Dry and bitter, not at all sweet. Flavors are similarly dry, roasty, and hoppy. Lasting residual bitterness in the aftertaste. Bitter unsweetened chocolate and dark roast coffee up front, herbal pine in the middle and finish. Dry ashy roast, vague hop oils and bitter orange peel. Light and drinkable with ample hop character. Overall a nice and tightly put together black IPA.

Thanks for this one Eric!

Appearance: Black, big foamy head.

Smell: Not as much as I thought with a big head, a mostly piney aroma.

Taste: Piney hops and roasted malt before giving way to coffee in the finish.

Overall: I'm not the biggest black IPA fan but got a 6er to support this local brewery. Midnight Ryder is well made and pretty tasty even though it's not my favorite style. I prefer Day Tripper over this one.

A - super black, although thin in appearance, very consistent with the style, small amount of head when poured, but dissipates fairly quickly, decent overall appearance especially for the style.

S - Sweet. I get a very natural beer smell, almost like straight from the beer kegs in Europe. Yeasty and sweet and brown sugar and smooth, not astringent at all and very much the style of old.

T - burnt sugar in the best sense, hoppy yet sweet - think your average black IPA then tune up each end of the senses 3 of 4 times.

M - Average. Very decent, very good carbonation and smoothness, but nothing above average.

O - Great. Tastes fantastic, very drinkable for a solid black IPA, think your ends of the spectrum, basic hoppy v. sweet and amp up each end a dozen times, and you get this beer - it still balances each other but still very taste laden and full of flavor. Great example of the style, something the community should strive for. Out of a can nonetheless! Dispute solved!!

A - Opaque, jet-black color with a one-finger, light brown head of foam. It left sticky patches of lace.

S - Smelled of pine. Lots of pine with some roasty character.

T - Good roasted malt flavor up front with a piney bitterness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale.

O - Third Indeed brew for me and another good beer. Must get more next time I'm in MN.

12oz can poured into my brand new Rock Island snifter - all courtesy of GraniteSkunk (thanks man!).

A: Porter or stout-like pour yields an opaque brown or even black body. A Light tan cap settles from two solid fingers into a constant ring. Good lacing.

S: Big chocolate malt and almost equally bid piney and spicy/earthy hop notes. Malt and roast, mild caramel. Faint suggestions of citrus rind and possibly grapefruit in the hops.

T: Follows the nose with pungent, roasty balance; piney hops, moderate roasted chocolate malt, resin, faint citrus, light suggestions of espresso bitterness on the finish.

There is a faint spiciness on both the aroma and flavor profile that makes me think 'rye malt', though there is no mention anywhere on the can of it being used in the brewing process.

MF: Medium body with a moderate lingering bitterness. Balances the beer nicely. Adequate carbonation.

O: Really very tasty. Not a style I reach out for very much anymore, but to me this is done to near perfection.

On tap at the taproom. Dark brown and clear with good looks in every way. The hops are fresh, Indeed: smells almost like hop pellets with roast lurking in the background. Hard to decipher hop flavor in the taste though, but there's ample bitterness and roast. Medium mouthfeel, relatively clean finish and good drinkability.

Pours black with raisin colored highlights, and a two finger tan head with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma has dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus, and pine.

There is a good amount of citrus and pine bitterness in the taste, as well as cocoa, dark roasted malt, and some caramel. The cocoa and caramel malt provide some sweetness to balance out the bitterness. Very nice balance.

Medium bodied, smooth, with soft carbonation. Very easy to drink. I could drink this on a regular basis.
