Thanks to Jeff for this one. 750ml bottle into a Cigar City snifter. Shared with schen9303.
Pours a rich, frothy 3.5 finger mocha colored head with excellent retention. Beer is pitch black. Lacing is thick and layered with awesome stick. Perfect.
Nose is citrus, roast, pine, cocoa and hop bitterness. A bit awkward but aromatic and deep.
Opens citrus, cocoa, roast and liquorice. Hop bitterness and smoke come in towards the middle with a sprinkle of chocolate and mocha sweetness. Resin-y hop bitterness, tea leaves, and more roast at the finish. Same aftertaste. Pretty nice.
Medium bodied with ample carbonation. Slick and slightly bubbly in the mouth and goes down smooth and warm. Messy finish with a lingering aftertaste. Very good.
I've never been a big fan of Black IPA's but this is actually pretty decent. The sweetness mixes well with the roast and hop notes. Worth trying.

A- Super black with a big, cocoa head. Retention is long lasting. Head has some big bubbles in it. Very, very dark.
S- Given how the guy at the liquor store who suggested this described it, I was expecting a more malt forward flavor. It is actually very hoppy on the nose, though this is not a criticism. Pine aroma, and maybe a hint of citrus fruit. Malt is there with a bit of dark caramel and smoke. Definitely hop forward.
T- Hops really prove to be the leading force. There is some smoke and coffee holding it together, but the piney hops really carry the day. I would have liked to have seen it be a bit more roasty, but I do like the hop profile here.
M- Full-bodied, moderately smooth, long finish.
O- A very good beer and worth trying. They definitely went hop aggressive here (as they should), but would have liked just a bit more balance to it. Good flavors and body though, and worth stopping at the taphouse for.
