Pours out black as night with a two finger beige head with great staying power and some nice lacing. Smell is dark malts, slight bit of pepper, maybe a little bit of chocolate but the malts are the showcase in the nose along with some smoke. Taste is smoky with more chocolate, more peppers, and definitely the malts in the background. Actually I would say the peppers and the dark malts are the most upfront and seem to go well together. While it's slightly hot it also has the distinct taste of jalapenos which I love. If the peppers are going to be upfront it's nice to taste a jalapeno as I love them. Mouthfeel is decently thick when swished around the mouth due to the nice carbonation. Definitely not thick like an aged BCBS but still some thickness there. Overall I like this beer more than I thought I would as it has been sitting and staring at me for over a month and I finally popped her open. Really a pretty nicely balanced beer as the smoke, malts, and peppers really all seem to compliment each other instead of overwhelming one another.
The beer is 9.0 ABV if anyone knows how to update that.

Everything about this beer is perfect, it's an excellent example of every style of beer that makes it up, porter, smoke beer, pepper beer all balanced perfectly together, and this year I don't even have to go down to indeed to get one! This is in my opinion an amazing example of how complex a beer can be but still beautifully simple if that makes any sense. This is just such a balanced beer and perfect to pair with food and friends in the ridiculously long frigidly freezing winter we've had here. None of the flavors overwhelm the palate or over take the others. So pleasant, not too much smoke or heat, I'd say the smoke a high low and the heat is moderate but you still have a great porter as a base, I think indeed should start canning the porter without the smoke and peppers as a year round beer, that would be glorious! one of my favorite beers that I tried and forgot to rate of last year and it's just as good if not better this year, yum!

Hot Box Imperial Smoked Pepper Porter. Collaboration of Indeed and Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub. Imperial porter aged over smoked Poblano & Jalapeno peppers.
Pours a dark, clear brown with an attractive two finger head that had good retention before settling to a thick cap. Massive amount of lacing is left down the glass.
Smokey aroma of wood and chile smoke. Notes of chocolate, coffee, and earth. Has a little bit of a ashy campfire smell that knocks the score down a little of an otherwise excellent aroma.
Definitely more than Minnesota spicy. Heat and spice hit the back of the throat and hangs around. Plenty of wood smoke in the flavor as well. Not rauchbier level of smoke but still a big flavor player. Good sweetness from the malt adds balance and complexity with notes of cocoa and coffee. Pick up some earthy and grassy hops as well. Very complex flavor and worth digging into.
Medium body with creamy, smooth carbonation and texture. Pleasurable to drink.
Maybe one of the more radical beers to be packaged in Minnesota. Not Minnesota nice. The spice and smoke is going to alienate a lot of locals, but it is an excellently crafted and composed beer.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.
Appearance: Very dark brown with good-sized tan head and light lacing.
Smell: Definite smoke, almost peaty, peppers, heat and molasses.
Taste: The smoke and the hot peppers take center stage and compliment each other nicely. Some balance with the molasses and chocolate notes from the Porter base. Lingering smoke and jalapeño.
Feel: Fairly smooth, medium to full body with moderately low carbonation. The heat from the peppers makes the finishing mouthfeel a little bit uncomfortable at times.
Overall: A very tasty beer that I wish I had more of. While the heartburn inducing finish is a little bit of nuisance, it doesn't fully detract from this unique offering from Indeed.
