To the best of my knowledge this beer was introduced by COORS Brewery shortly after taking over Bass Brewery in Burton on Trent in UK a couple of years ago (2004?) It was their idea to introduce a new beer under the new management with the intention of saying "look, now we have taken over Bass, we can produce a decent beer despite your fears!" It was introduced into the beer scene locally in Burton on tap, and at local Beer Festivals. Had on tap it appears fairly light coloured for a "bitter" beer, with reasonable aroma, though nothing special. Initial taste was slightly bitter and fairy pleasant, but the after taste more malty and strangely sweet and less attractive, and for that reason I did not much like it.

At the time of writing this review (Oct 2006) I do not think this beer is being produced anymore, I certainly have not seen it on tap or at any Beer Festivals during the past 12 months, so maybe Coors have given up on it and classed it as a marketing failure.

Pours a deep amber with an off-white with moderate retention with some lacing down the glass. A hint of toffee in the smell but nothing too exciting. The taste is biscuity with some toffee hints finishing fairly crisp. The mouthfeel is thin and it is over-carbonated in my opinion. All around this is a pretty mediocre offering to what is out there and I probably won't try it again. If I see it on cask, however, I may give it another go.

(Bottle, bought in Denmark). ABV is 4.4%. Deep amber (okay, chestnut) colour, moderate head. Too much CO2 for a bitter. Moderate aroma of toffee/caramel and malts, hints of dried fruits / fruitcake. Flavour is malty with a reasonable bitterness, finish is a bit watery. Easy drinking, nice enough - but nothing special either.

Pours a ruby to amber colour with an off-white head.

The aroma is fruity and woody. Largely unexciting.

The taste is fruity, dry, a little tangy, but overall just very plain and average.

The mouthfeel is adequate, drinkability is mediocre.

Overall pretty average. This beer is apparently much better on tap, but as far as bottles go, this one isn't great.

I made the mistake of drinking this just after the Jolly Ploughman from Highwood, and it does not measure up.

A nice caramel color, as is usual and expected. This beer had no head to speak of and no carbonation to speak of. What carbonation there was was lost on the pour, and completely non-existant in the mouth. The smell was on the bitter/shunky side.

When drinking this beer, it tastes completely flat. It is like drinking dirty water. It hung on your tongue and the top of your mouth, without being refreshing. The aftertaste was not very pleasant.

There are much better examples of English Ale out there. Try them instead.

grabbed this brew on the cheap after eyeing it off for a while. in the end it just tasted like a poor mans pedigree. that says it all really.

normal english ale appearance, but didnt have any of the complexity of others in the style. fruity like they all are with hints of wood, in nose and mouth. lacked any zing on the palate, faded away to nothing with no substantial hop presence. felt more full in body than it was, had a hint of syrupy sweetness but not enuff impact to put it up there with the best of em. if you can call english ales boring at any stage, this is fair example. its quite drinkable. but theres at least a hundred classics, and this doest get in there.

id drink this when its out in front of me, otherwise there are plenty better investments to use the hard earned beer money on. having said that, i dont dislike this beer.
