Notes/Commercial Description:
Our flagship beer is a refreshing Golden brew that uses a blend of the finest Canadian and German malts giving it a smooth mild body that balances the crisp, pleasant German hop finish. The hops used in this local brew are soon to be grown at our very own hop yard at the Phillips farm in Manotick.

Can: Poured a clear bright golden color ale with a nice large white foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of grainy cereal notes is not the most pleasant. Taste is also dominated by grainy unrefined notes with light cereal notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Malt bill is definitely not clean enough in my opinion.

473 mL can served well-chilled; a surprise addition to my local LCBO's craft beer selection. Other than Beau's, I really can't recall the last time an Ottawa-area beer made it all the way to shops in Sarnia.

Pours a bright golden-blonde colour, clear as day, with just under two fingers of loose, soapy, white froth seated atop. The head steadily recedes over the next few minutes, in the end leaving behind a thin, foamy film and some messy lace. Looks normal enough. The aroma is dominated by grainy pale malts and honey sweetness, with minor notes of grass and butterscotch.

The flavour falls along the same lines. Grainy barley malts, with an unusually prominent sweetness akin to butterscotch or honey underlying them. Not much is heard from the hops, other than a vaguely grassy, dirty earthiness in the finish. Along with the butterscotch vibe, this sensation lingers on the palate for much longer than I'd prefer in a style that is supposed to be mild and sessionable. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a slightly crisp bite appropriate for the style. Not that great; reminds me of a few other overpriced 'craft blondes' available in this market that seem more aimed at poaching macro drinkers than satisfying the craft beer fans.

Final Grade: 3.10, a C+. Big Rig Gold is a serviceable beer, but I doubt I'll bother picking up any more of this. Macro beer drinkers shouldn't have much trouble adjusting to this brew, but BAs will be left feeling underwhelmed by this middling blonde ale, as it simply fails to offer anything we haven't already seen before. Fans of bare-bones craft brews like Iron Spike Blonde, Hockley 100 or Top Shelf Lager should consider this one worth a look - but on the other hand, people who already know that those beers aren't up their alley will be best served by not bothering with this one. My final thought as I finished the glass? I'd rather drink Labatt 50.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Purchased for $2.75 CDN from LCBO.

Appearance - clear light golden color with minimal bubbles. Topped by about 2 fingers of fluffy white head with a good retention time. Some thick bubbly lacing lepton the side of the glass.

Smell - grainy with a faint caramel and vanilla sweetness throughout, pretty simple.

Taste- mile with a distinctly malt butterscotch and vanilla flavor profile.hop bitterness is minimal and so are any other flavours.

Mouthfeel - smooth, creamy with a moderately low carbonation.

Overall - not a bad blonde lager, but nothing out of the ordinary. If you really like vanilla and butterscotch though definitely a worthy purchase, otherwise if you're looking for something new, give it a try, you might really enjoy this one.

355 mL bottle. Poured into a pilsener glass. This was a gift from my extended family in Ottawa. Beer pours a medium golden color with little head and minor lacing. Smells of cereal grains. The taste is, well, like most Canadian craft lagers. That is, there's nothing wrong with it, but there's nothing profound or memorable, either. Corn notes are very present. Mouthfeel is light and smooth. Overall, this seems like a great beer for a hockey or football game, maybe a summer BBQ, but not one to bring to a shared tasting with friends.
