Pours a dark red, murky. Head is beige, bubbly. Pleasant enough, nice colour. Not spectacular.

Smells grainy, sweet, with a bit of roast on there giving a touch of coffee, caramel and vanilla. Quite sweet, malty. Decent.

Taste is more roasty, but plenty of that sweet vanilla flavour, caramel, particularly upfront, then finish is nicely dark, bitter territory. Smooth transition from sweet to bitter though. My kind of brown beer.

Bit dry at the back, leaves a touch of sandy tongue on the finish, but OK.

I like a well-made brown ale a lot. And this is a well-made brown ale. Good dessert pairing.

(Notes from tasting)

Calicraft Oaktown Brown:

Appearance: brown with red & yellow highlights;

Smell: light coffee, roasted oats;

Taste/Mouthfeel: slightly bubbly for a stout/dark style beer, hoppy, coffee, slight orange notes.

Pretty good.

Poured into a sample glass.

Had on-tap at the bar at SOMA StreatFood Park. Reviewed from notes.

A - Dark brown, clear body with an off-white head that quickly disappeared before I found a place to sit down.

S - Light nutty bread, milk chocolate, and raisins. Faint hint of hops.

T - Seemed watered down for some reason. The smells were evident in the taste, but to a lesser degree than expected. For some reason, the back end and aftertaste reminded me of how floral fabric softener smells (think chemically synthesized flowers).

M - Easy-drinking, light bodied and light carbonation.

O - An okay beer, not that bad, but not that good. Though listed at 6.7 ABV, it seemed like a session ale. The strange "fabric softener" aftertaste was not appealing, and is what made me not really like this one. I suppose I would have it again, but only if there wasn't something better available.

Pours a clear brown color with a small white head.

Aromas are light cocoa, nuts, and dark bread. The nose is faint but pleasant.

Taste is nutty up front. Creamy sweetness, light breads, then the beer fades to some light mineral hops and not much less. Not a bad tasting beer, but kind of boring.

Mouthfeel is crisp and clean, but on the thin side.

Overall, an OK brown, but kind of boring and basic. Not bad, but nowhere near worth the $6 price tag, you could probably brew your own instead.

This is all right but a bit hot, spicy, boozy and thin in character.

Deep red-brown, medium-small tan head, slowly shrinks to foamy ring.

Aroma is nice, caramelly nutty and toasty, nice woody element and hint of citrus and coffee, then caramel and chicken or tuna hint.

Taste is up front light, thin, roasty and bitter woody-peppery character with lingering burnt coffee bitterness. It is a bit watery and thin in feel and character, spicy, overly boozy and hot.

Wifey picked this up for me recently. Passed by numerous times...but time to give it it's due.
Label looks like the bear is covering his nether-regions. I press on....

Pours a dark, dark brown brew with a big time off-white foamy head. Light lacing.

Getting a lot of chocolate here in the aroma. Nuts also included. Wood. Hot cocoa. Light smoke, but overall this aroma is on the sweet side. Fruity. Liking it.

Roasted malts is the main taste, but the flavor is big here. Smokey, more sweet chocolate and big hope presence. Light pine is peaking through as well. I like the addition of the Cascade hops. It gives it a bite that is oftentime missing in brown ales. Maybe this is a hybrid style??

Brown ales are not my favorite style, but this is something I enjoyed. Overall I really like what the boys are doing here. Turning a sometimes boring (imo) malty, brown into a hybrid brown/IPA brew. Sort of reminds me of a black IPA but with more chocolate. I know these dudes are starting up but the two beers I've had so far are pretty good and I look forward to seeing what else is in store and supporting them along the way.

22 ounce bottle with no bottling dates.

Body is a very dark brown, nearing black. Foamy, khaki colored head. Fizzles out to a very thin covering, with pools of bubbles.

Nutty nose, with aromas of almonds and hazelnuts. Sweet chocolate and cream. Light oak aromas.

Very, very bitter from the start. Flavors of ash and charcoal. There's some nutty, chocolate flavors hidden in there, but they are immediately choked out by a disgusting bitterness that tastes like aspirin. Tastes horrible.

First off, tastes nothing like a brown ale. Second off, it tastes like someone ground up some aspirin and added it to my beer. Terrible. Avoid.

A - Pours a fairly dark brown with a bit of orange mixed in and a finger of frothy slightly off-white head. The head fades at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of chocolate and caramel malts, brown sugar, dark fruits, and a bit of oak and vanilla.

T - Starts off with some caramel and chocolate malts with a bit of dark fruit and vanilla. Through the middle, some coffee comes through with some brown sugar and a bit of wood. The finish is a mix of sweet caramel malts, wood, coffee, and a bit of dark fruit.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and lightly fruity finish.

D - Very drinkable. A bit light, but the flavors are nice and well balanced.

Appearance – Pours a very dark reddish brown; almost black clear color. A nice light brown (almost white) head that leaves a solid lacing.

Smell – Sweet malts, chocolate, and a hint of hops.

Taste – Taste is bland compared to the smell; it tastes watered down as if it were meant for the “mainstream” crowd. Slightly bitter, but not overly so.

Mouthfeel – Creamy but thin, lightly carbonated, easy to drink at 6.7%abv.

Drinkability – An average brown ale. Looks and smells great, but the taste is average.

The pour is a dark brown color with a khaki head. Toasted malt and bread with some strong roasted malt aromas. There is a hint of chocolate, a touch of ash, and some earthy hops. The flavor is far too bitter for a brown ale. Some toasted malt, cocoa, and lots of roasted malt. A hint of coffee, some earth, and burnt nuts. Was not a fan of this beer.

Bottle purchased from Berkeley Bowl West in Berkeley, CA.

Pours a reddish deep brown colour, with a frothy and rather vibrant head of yellowish-white. Lacing is good. Body looks solid. No visible carbonation, although the body is pretty opaque, meaning it'd be hard to see it even if it were there. Looks pretty decent.

Nose is pleasantly rich, sweet and deep, with pronounced brown malty characters giving sweet biscuit and sugared oatmeal goodness. There's an organic, grainy kick to it, but it's just a lilt to the rich deep, sweet brown characters. Yum.

Taste is lighter, especially in the feel, but the brown, grainy goodness sticks around, with a mildly roasted character lengthening the palate to a dusky finish like toasted brioche. Clean grain for the most part makes it feel good and wholesome. It's very pleasant. Feel is perfectly suitable. Only mildly carbonated, letting the malt coast through the slickness.

Really nice beer, and an impressive first effort from this brewery for me. Tasty, well-made stuff.

Pours dark brown with a loverly firm khaki head.

Nose is assertive esters, chocolate, malted milk and creamed sugared coffee - very nice.

Mouthfeel is rich, creamy, elegant, wonderfully balanced and very inviting.

Flavor profile is delicious coffee, malt, chocolate malt and burnt toast, all wonderfully balance with a rich burnt toast bitter.

Another very drinkable Calicraft beer. These guys are doing something right as all three of their current bottle offerings are very good and wonderfully drinkable, along or with food. Whether you like them or not is up to you; but, these are very well made brews.

Finish is dry malt, coffee and bitter chocolate, all long lasting and memorable.

22oz bottle into SN tulip shaped pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark ruddy brown with three or four fingers of thick dark tan head that slowly faded into a thick greasy film leaving tons of sticky lace down the glass.
S: Very roasted smelling with hints of toasted nuts and smoke. Caramel and sweet malts poke through, and I get a hint of toffee and cocoa as well.
T: Follows the nose with clean and smoky notes of sweet malts, roasted grains, toasted nuts, light cocoa, toffee and caramel. The finish is bitter with notes of leafy, piney, hops. Flavors are all well balanced and smooth. The aftertaste has the suggestion of coffee, but it’s light.
M: Medium-full body, smooth and easy drinking mouthfeel, and soft and clean carbonation. Drink very well. Chewy enough to satisfy but not too heavy to not have with a meal.
O: A very flavorful and easy to drink beer. Flavors are rich and easy and the go down smooth. A brewery I will definitely keep my eye on.
