The beer arrived on the table a clear blackish brown with no head, nada, none. The glass begged for some lacing, but it just didn't happen.

The aroma was chocolate with a strong licorice aromatic and a slight bit of coffee thrown in for good measure.

The flavor was chocolate with licorice and a bitter acidity from the dark grains. There was presence a nice maltiness with a slight nutty character.

The finish was dry with lasting bittering into aftertaste and chocolate, but that bitteirng came more from grains than from any hop additions. The body was medium. A nice enough beer, but they should have just made a porter.

Served up a tawny burgundy-brown. Compacted beige head stuck around.
Little to speak of aroma-wise. Faint dark fruit, mostly raisins. Uneventful.
Taste is comprised of subdued molasses hues mixed with liquorice and raisin notes. Not much malt depth. Lightly spicy finish indicate that hops were used, but they don't shine in any special way. Simple and disappointing.
Thin bodied. Weakly malty.
Bland but drinkable. Far from an exciting alt.

Pint poured at the brewpub. This beer has a dark, dull, lifeless appearance. There is no head at all. The aroma is vaguely malty, I suppose, but mostly lacking of any beer characteristics. The flavor is a little sweet, with some caramel. Not much malt flavor. The taste reminds me of cardboard. Mouthfeel is thin. Finishing the beer is a challenge. I'm not impressed.
