Bottle from a Parallel 49 mixed pack poured into a weizen glass. A pale yellow brew, quite cloudy, with a billowing white head and a surprisingly sour and funky aroma ... Smells legitimately Belgian and less like a coriander bomb than many other wits. I have to say, this brew was more interesting than expected. The watermelon was subdued and delivered more green, sour rind than pink watery flesh, a fact with which I am OK. I didn't plan on a Boxer Watermelon experience here (look up that beer, if you dare). Crisp and tart, with some white pepper, coriander, and lemon rind spice apparent along with an almost buttery sweet malt vibe ... For some reason I am reminded of apple cinnamon Cheerios breakfast cereal despite the fact that the overall effect is quite sour with just a little nuttiness. Highly carbonated and on the thin side body-wise, as one might expect ... Some floral hops show up in the green vegetal finish (they hop this with Fuggles, interestingly enough). If you want my honest assessment, this is the sort of witbier I gravitate towards despite the potentially gimmicky watermelon addition. It has some genuine Belgian funky character that even a few of my non-beer geek drinking buddies picked up on and there is no Rickards White style coriander nastiness. If I have any concern at all, it is the fact that the beer is perhaps TOO dry and fizzy at times, when one can particularly notice the sour rind flavor. All in all, though, this is how to do a fruit beer.

341ml single bottle. Watermelon and brewing seems so much like chasing ghosts with a pitchfork to me.

This beer pours a hazy, bright medium golden yellow colour, with one fat finger of loosely foamy, bubbly, and rather fizzy off-white head, which leaves nothing in the way of lace around the glass as it quickly subsides.

It smells of sweet, candied wheat malt, vegetal watermelon rind, a further unusual flinty graininess, and faint leafy, earthy hops. The taste is actually dominated by watermelon – huh, who knew – as that familiar (in summer, at least) fleshy fruitiness joins the initial rind essence in overshadowing the meek wheaty, grainy malt, and quite subtle attendant witbier usual suspect spices. Again, there’s a strange flinty mineral character that is easy enough to ignore, as are the ethereal, as best, weedy, leafy hops.

The bubbles are definitely quite sedate, the body medium-light in weight, and generally smooth, those edgy mineral notes biting back a bit at this juncture. It finishes still fruity, a wee bit grainy, and yet a bit flinty, all under a nicely moderated off-dryness.

Well, I've tried a few watermelon flavoured beers before, and it was all I could do to discern even the faintest echo of said fruit. Not here, nosirreee Bob! This is big on the fleshy, rindy (!), and seedy (?) goodness that is one of my summertime indulgences, which also seems somehow to marry well enough with a rather plain witbier. Interesting, though I don't know how many of these I'd want to put back, back to back.

A - clear golden, short head resulted in a clear glass of semi bubbly golden brew with not much head to speak of
S - big wheaty and pilsnery hop aromas, mild sweet watermelon bubbalicious gum aroma makes an appearance that sticks like the gum
T - big stuggle between wheat and cracker grain malt with the sweet watermelon and bubble gum flavlours, with a perfumy hop presence on the side, they basically make a nice compromise as the malt brings up the front while the hops & profile ingredient holds down the rear
M - a little on the light side with mlidish carbonation, but does bring up some body with a very fruity and perfumy feel that ends dry
O - don't know that i've tried an watermelon brew but it seems the sweet and mild flavour of the fruit goes well with the characteristics of a whitbier, would like to see more of this around

I decided to give this one another chance. I've sampled it before, but I didn't like it enough to actually buy it and drink a whole beer, or rather, six whole beers. For some reason, a wheat beer with watermelon seems like a good idea this week.

355 ml bottle poured into a weizen glass.

Cloudy golden yellow, not a lot of head.

Smell is less than appealing. Not the worst beer if I've ever smelled, but honestly, it kind of makes me want to just pour it down the drain instead of drinking it. Maybe this was a mistake.

Fortunately, it tastes quite a bit better than it smells. I don't know if I actually taste watermelon. It's peppery and sort of sour. Easy to drink.

Mouthfeel: pleasantly crisp. Probably the best aspect of this one.

A: Pours a hazy golden wheat with about 2 fingers of white head which quickly dissipates into a thin rim around the glass. I don't normally mention the bottle - but eight the emblem embossed into the glass and an old-timey watermelon spitter grinning ear to ear the bottle itself warrants a 2 thumbs up.

S: Instant scent of watermelon upon opening the bottle, although tho is less noticeable in the glass. Scents of wheat, citrus, coriander and white pepper on the nose. Background scents of tangy sweetness.

T: Initial taste of cream of wheat cereal, citrus peel, coriander and white pepper and finishes with a nice blast of cool watermelon. Very clean and crisp and easy drinking. Even though this is a fruit flavoured wit, it remains true to the wit style.

M: Light bodied with medium carbonation. Clean, crisp and dry.

O: This is an excellent summer patio drinking beer. It is a nice representation of a traditional wit while adding a unique summer finish. Well worth seeking out.

Appearance: It has a nice hazy golden/yellow color to it. It has a nice white head that dies down somewhat fast and leaves next to no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of wheat, watermelon, coriander and citrus.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some dominant wheat malts, light sugary watermelon, coriander and faint citrus.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by decent flavors and aromas.
