Beer is reddish-amber in colour, with a small off-white head. Head fades quickly.

Nose suggests a beer well balanced between malt and hops. Notes of grass and light citrus fruits couple with toasted malt and caramel.

Taste is similar to the nose. Tilted slightly towards the malt, a nice toasted caramel flavour imparting some sweetness. Hops provide some light citrus fruits and a grassy flavour. Finish is slightly bitter.

Light to medium bodied, moderate carbonation level. Chewy.

Overall, pretty nice, though not remarkable.

The present review is based on a bottle from a Parallel 49 mixed pack of "hoppy" beers, but I have had this beer on a few other occasions on tap. Although many macro-brewed red/amber ales can look more rusty brown than anything, this one has a legit orange-to-red clear and sparkly appearance with around four fingers of off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma is a fairly big blast of West Coast grapefruit hops and very lush caramel/crystal malts, the latter component makes me think raisin bread. Taste follows the nose, with a fruity, chewy malt backbone that evokes cherries and toffee. Very sweet malts but the hops aren't shy either, there's a decent hit of menthol resins and orange citrus, some leafy green notes, and a classic hoppy dankness that is often apparent in BC craft brews. Fairly thick body but not overly syrupy. Finish combines sweet lingering and bitter elements as you might expect, although the bitter perhaps edges out the sweet. I don't get any obvious faults here, which is rare in an American red ale ... As I've mentioned in a few previous reviews, I am not a huge fan of the style and even some craft examples have a stale cardboard character, are underhopped, and lack much malt character beyond a bland generic sweetness. This brew, however, is quite excellent and perhaps the best domestic exemplar of a red ale in Canada. Sweet but hopped well, cherry cough candy character. Recommended.

On draft at Chill Winston, Vancouver.

Gleaming ruby with white film.
Berry, flowers and toffee on the nose.
Cherry cough drop with apple and toast then light pine resin and ruby grapefruit hops.
Strawberry finish and clean bitter linger.
Medium, round, chewy.

Big, sweet amber with lots of fruit. Malt forward, but stays bright without being overhopped. 5 AM Saint comparisons wouldn't be misplaced. Very sessionable.
