341ml bottle. Awesome idea for a Christmas-themed offering - the label appears to be a hillbilly Conan O'Brien, resplendent in his worst holiday chemise.

This beer pours a deep, dark, damned-near black hue, with sexy ruby cola highlights when duly backlit, and two solid fingers of broadly bubbly, densely foamy pale beige head, which leaves some limestone strata lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of chalky dry cocoa, mild mid-day coffee, roasted caramel and toasted bready malt, a mild orchard fruitiness, and some tame lactic sourness. The taste is semi-sweet caramel malt, hot chocolate powder, a soft oily nuttiness, some tame milky creaminess, and very faint earthy hops.

The bubbles are present, and supportive in an appropriate background way, the body a sturdy medium weight, and smooth in a decently creamy manner. It finishes on the sweet side, but just barely, the chocolate and cafe au lait notes still large and in charge.

A rather pleasant milk stout, with nicely attendant coffee shop flavours, an easy drinker when you must navigate the plates of too-available desserts, and even more so, the way-too prevalent shitty sweaters, apparently.

Great label! A truly handsome gent wearing a, you guessed it, ugly sweater. From notes.

Appearance. Pours a deep dark brown with some red coming through at the edges when held to a light. Looked filtered during the pour. Capped with about a finger of khaki head that fades quickly to a skim.

Smell. Creamy coffee and some sweet dark chocolate. Dark malts come through as well, maybe slightly metalic.

Taste. Creamy and sweet, but not too sweet. Some nice coffee and a bit of chocolate. Very smooth flavours, very drinkable.

Mouthfeel. Below medium body with medium, smooth carbonation.

Overall. An incredibly easy drinking beer with some nice, classic milk stout flavours. I could, and will drink a bunch of these. Nice new beer from a great new BC brewery

Thanks to biboergosum for this one.

Poured from a 341ml. bottle, no freshness info.

Appearance: Dark brown body, looks lighter in the pour. 2-3 fingers of foam that lasts a minute or two for disappearing, leaving a bit of lacing.

Smell: Charred wood, chocolate, lactic, bit roasted, milk chocolate.

Taste: Mild espresso, cold milk chocolate, cocoa powder, bit nutty. Lacks depth, a bit muddled.

Mouthfeel: Prickly carbonation, bit watery, lacks robustness but some smoothness to it.

Overall: Average offering, a bit too ordinary.

A: Pours a clear dark black/brown or cola with 1 finger of head that quickly dissipated to leave a skim of head across the top.

S: Strong aroma of espresso and cocoa powder followed toasted malts. Slight hint of cherries.

T: Toasted malts, slight acrid, similar to a drip coffee and hints of yeast. The strong espresso and cocoa powder that was on the nose is not apparent in the taste which I was looking forward to. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

M: Starts off almost watery but finishes with a thicker, creamier coating similar to chocolate milk. Very low carbonation.

O: This was much lighter than I was expecting, not as heavy as most stouts. It has a nice lingering mouth feel and I could enjoy two in a sitting. Worth picking up.

Parallel 49 -'Ugly Sweater' Milk Stout @ 5.0% , from a 6pack of 341 ml bottles costing $13 , consumed over the recent Holidaze season

A-pour is a very dark brown , with a thin tan/off white head that is quickly dissapating leaving a lace ring along the stein

S-coffee/espresso , hints of cocoa

T-sweetness+ , a sweet caramel malt dominates , taste is like a weak/mild RIS ,

MF-low carbonation , weak medium body beyond the 5.0 % ABV that's trying to pack a punch,

Ov-an easy drinking holiday beer , that's way to sweet for my palate , 6pack will be enough

A: Black; pours with a nice, light tan head; very thin ring of retention shows a little leg.

S: Coffee, sweet grain, brown sugar, roasted nut, hint of chocolate.

T: Much like an overly sweet coffee, some roasted nut and cocoa, hints of fruity British esters, modest bitterness.

M: Well-attenuated with a pleasant sweetness in the finish.

O: A pretty easy drinker... something you could to take to a Christmas party to introduce people to craft beer.

appearance - look's really thin and silky for a stout & has a little thin layer of head as well i love the little bubble's in my glass.

smell - not too much going on here you could generally smell what a stout would smell like.

taste - was what i expected a nice creamy balance of chocolate and coffee notes. the alcohol was well hidden in this 5% beverage. the after taste was very creamy wich is what i expect from a milk stout.

mouthfeel - this beer is very easy to drink my glass only lasted a couple of minutes because im a stout drinker. Almost feel's like i stuck of bar of Aero's in my mouth and let it melt.

overall - 13 dollar's for a 6 pack this beer is interesting as it's a milk stout wich can make it more creamy but stout drinkers might want a little more flavor were this one was more well rounded with chocolate, coffee and milk.

Appearance- Pours a dark cola brown with a finger of frothy mocha head.

Smell- roasted malts, chocolate, nuttiness, and hint of dark fruit.

Taste- Similar to the aromas, with the roasted malts and chocolate taking centre stage with the nuttiness coming through in the end with a slight hint of dark fruit. Drinks like a porter rather than a stout.

Mouthfeel- Medium to full bodied with light carbonation.

Overall- A milk stout that is weak in its delivery. Drinks more like a porter than a stout. This brew has elements there but needs to go back to the drawing board to make it more true to the milk stout style.

I've been pondering this beer's label. Its label is much like this beer: a toothless guy wearing a sweater only a grandma could love. That kind of describes the beer in a nutshell, I think. It's a bit of a toothless stout only grandmas could love.

I guess I should appease the BA review etiquette and talk about its appearance, smell, etc. Its appearance is fine: it looks like a stout, it pours a pretty dark... uh... black, I guess? It also leaves some decent lacing as the beer is emptied from its shell. Smell is faint cocoa, maybe some caramel.

Taste is where I run into somewhat of a problem with this stout. It tastes like sweet cocoa milk, basically. The emphasis is on the word sweet. This is a sweet stout in the fullest sense of the word and it's nearly undrinkable for me. It's a really unbalanced stout in that it misses anything that would even out the sweetness: some roasted malts, an invigorating coffee flavor, some nice bitter hops at the end. Due to this, it also lacks any sort of complexity that would make a stout like this interesting. It basically just tastes like pure, teeth-rotting, sweet milk chocolate. I guess some people might find that appealing but it's really not what I look for in my stouts.

I've found it mixes great with other beers, though. Try half a glass of this and half a glass of Salty Scot. You'll end up with what amounts to a Mars bar in liquid, alcoholic form. Truly a match made in heaven. It also works great with other stouts you may find too strong either flavor-wise or ABV-wise. Is that imperial stout making you a bit too rowdy? No worries! Dilute it with a bit of Ugly Sweater and you'll find yourself truly enjoying life and your new beer cocktail! In view of that, maybe I should give it a higher rating. Hmmm. Nahhhh.

341ml bottle poured into pint glass 4/2/13

A dark cola edges with a short lived thumbs width of mocha foam that leaves a couple random patches of lace

S coco and dried dark fruit, sweet chocolate and some cold coffee cream included, smells decent

T fruity dark roast, much like the smell but with a little more sweetness, again pretty solid

M light-medium and creamy, sweet nutty coco finish lingers for a while

O not a bad milk stout at the end of the day, nice mellow sweetness and roast work rather well

I could have another without getting board but not the best I've had from this great new brewer, worth a shot in the mixed 12

Great choice for a sessionable winter seasonal ( shades of Widmer's old winter beer Snowplow). The mouthfeel is big and smooth on the finish. The sweetness is only slightly on the finish but you still realize this is a milk stout rather than the dry stout normally found . I like how Parallel 49 also offered bigger offerings for winter in their CDA Black Christmas and Scottich Ale . This is a beer for Holiday parties and events where you want lots of flavour but not a huge ABV.
