From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #67 (August 2012):
LOOK: Nearly black, great-looking head, legs
SMELL: Heather, bitters, anise, wormwood, plum pudding, booze
TASTE: Sweet, full bodied, creamy, mineral, brown sugar, French toast, fennel, brown bread, yeast, nutty, spicy alcohol, candied fruit, earthy, sweet finish
Gluttony; I guess we are sinning right now while enjoying this massive ale. You’ll want to take your time with this brew, which is pushing the limits with the level of alcohol and herb additions. Consider this beer an after-dinner drink or simply a nightcap … a decent replacement for a glass of bitters.

On tap at the Tap and Bottle, Tucson AZ. Got it before they ran out! This is a very distinctive brew, way off the map with respect to other beers. Calling it a Belgian Strong Dark Ale is about the best you can do, because all of those words are accurate, but it shares basically nothing with other beers in that style.
A: Pitch black to my eye, and no head. About the same number of bubbles as in a glass of water. I have to say that this look really appeals to me (possibly because I don't really like carbonation in beer).
S: Fruit and spices, like something you'd drink to warm up on a winter day. Quite inviting.
T: Mulled wine. This is technically a beer, but really has none of the characteristics of any beer I've had. Sweet raisins, some of those dates (although not as identifiable), and mulled wine spices like cinnamon and cloves and who knows what else. A lot like glögg, although more easy-drinking. No particular malty flavors, and certainly no hops evident. I would be proud if I brewed something that tastes like this.
M: Thick and smooth. Tiny bubbles appear as it moves around the mouth, adding thickness but not interfering with the taste. Awesome.
All in all, a nice departure from beer.

A - Pours a dark brown-black with a big finger of frothy khaki-brown head. The head fades very slowly leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel and dark malts, plum, raisin, and other dark fruits, Belgian yeast, spices, candi syrup, and some booze.
T - Starts off with a mix of sweet caramel and dark malts, raisin, date, and other dark fruits, and Belgian yeast spices including cinnamon, clove, and coriander. Through the middle, some more fruity flavors come through with some cherry, candi syrup, and some more Belgian yeast character. The finish is a mix of dark fruits and malts with some candi syrup, Belgian yeast spices, and a bit of booze.
M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet, fruity, and warming finish.
D - Very drinkable. Nice malty and fruity backbone with with yeast flavors. Nicely balanced.

500ml into a tulip. Pours a deep opaque walnut, light mocha colored head slow to subside, nice lacing.
Aroma is big and expressive like a noël. Very heavily spiced with cinnamon, anise, clove, coriander and dozens of imagined others, no alcohol.
Sweet spicy goodness, very sweet. Figs and other dark fruits that have begun to turn. Anise molasses with cinnamon and an herbal finish. Aftertaste lingers past its welcome. The alcohol is just a minor solvent note, needs to come forward more to balance the sweetness. Medium bodied, very filling.
an overly enthusiastic noël

A: Pours a dark translucent mahogany, with a large amount of dense tan head. A fairly thick blanket retains, leaving solid walls of lacing.
S: Anise, burnt caramel, and molasses.
T: Rich sweet anise. Very smooth and extremely well balanced. The finish is long and sweet with a touch bitterness that is almost reminiscent of mint. Very nice. No noticeable alcohol.
M: Full body, medium carbonation.
Overall, wonderful. Extremely smooth, balanced, and drinkable.
