a slightly bigger version of their base esb, this darker colored take on the style is a good one. its silky smooth due to appropriately low carbonation levels, and it has a real malty richness before developing a characteristic hop bite before it finishes. the darker malt bill is nice in this one, gives some body and some depth to the style where it can be missing at times, and the little bit more roasty character in it, along with the stronger beer, make it a really nice colder weather brew. my only real complaint here is this funny tannic feel in the late middle and finish of the beer. its mildly acidic and seems both flat and off, harsh even. its not long lived, and it doesnt ruin the experience, but it probably would keep me from having more than a few of these in a given session. one of the more unique english ales being brewed in the denver area.

On cask at the brewery which was nice as I had seen it at backcountry pizza the night before but they apparently had to wait for someone to hook up the ask the next day. Dark chestnut color, short head. Aroma was sort of fruity yeast and my friend said it was like starburst which I never would have picked up on until she said that. Ahh, the power of suggestion. Flavor was more fruitiness, nice malt, overall a good beer but falls short of the cask Chin wag with Simcoe.
