American Brown Ale |  5.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Charter Oak's 1687 Brown Ale (this was the year the legend of the Charter Oak took place, and Wadsworth hid the document in the majestic Oak Tree - later to become know as The Charter Oak) is an American style which is slightly more robust than the traditional English Brown Ale. This beer will be brewed to a dark copper shade and be somewhat sweet and malty with distinctive toasted flavors from both our premium specialty roasted and chocolate malted barley, also allowing for a faint undertone of caramel. This style is lightly hopped for balance and this ale will prove to be a wonderful selection for a sessionable beer. Our medium-bodied, limited bitterness and hop aroma will make this an excellent choice.

look: 3.25 | smell: 3 | taste: 2.5 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 2.5

Appearance: high carbonation, 1/4 inch head, clear, brown in color

Smell: toffee, nut, and toasted malt

Taste: toffee, barky-woodsy hops, toasted malt, and dark chocolate

Mouthfeel: Sweet with a bitterness in the middle and a slightly less bitter end, light body, moderate-high carbonation

Overall: Was a lot more bitter for the style than I am used to. I found the bitterness to clash and not compliment the sweeter malts. I have a lot of beers I like in this style, so I will be passing on this in the future.

Slight orangey brown head despite a vigorous pour, but does leave a fine cap of tightly bubbled foam. Aroma of toasted malt and cocoa.

Flavors of darkly toasted malt, some cocoa and leather. Slight roasty bitterness, mild offsetting hop flavors. Good balance of hops and malt. Slight caramel note, mild hints of sweetness.

Full mouthfeel, satisfying but not filling. Very good beer.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #67 (August 2012):

LOOK: Amazing head retention, dark reddish-amber

SMELL: Very toasty, bread crust, brown sugar, Muscat grapes, chicory, unsweetened chocolate, dried hay, fallen apples, tea

TASTE: Smooth, semi-creamy, treacle, mild coffee, raisins, toasted grain, bread crust, faint alcohol, balanced hop bitterness, caramel, ripe pears, cocoa nibs, grassy; long, lingering dry finish

Old-school American Brown Ale all the way—hops don’t have to be the only factor to rise up and balance a beer out. The toasted / roasted character does a lot of the balancing here. Very well-put-together beer and different enough to set it apart from the norm. We definitely want to see more from Charter Oak.

A: Pours a deep mahogany color with a solid one finger head that dissipates to a fine lace ring around the edge of the glass, small patches of bubbles persist in the middle as well.

S: Aroma is primarily that of bready, maltiness, biscuity comes to mind as a description, there is also some nuttiness in the nose, almost like an walnut.

T: Mild on flavor with a light hoppiness followed by the earlier maltiness and a slight amount of yeast.

M: Again, milder on the tongue, with a light amount of carbonation that makes this a good sipper, nothing overpowering, just an enjoyable beer.

O: Overall, a quite enjoyable brew, definitely a good summer beer as it is quite refreshing and enjoyable.
