Poured into a nonic pint glass, I was greeted by a deep brown colored body that allowed very little light to pass through. Crowned by a tan, pillowy head that leaves a decent amount of lacing behind.
The aroma here is simple, but not that of your typical brown ale. Cocoa nibs with vague hints of roasted coffee. Light traces of molasses provide sweetness. It's crisp, but reminds me more of a stout.
How does it taste then? Well.. like a delicious ale that shares qualities of a brown and qualities of a porter. A lot of bitter chocolate is present here. Light peat character and sweet molasses. Faint nuttiness, but not nearly enough for the style. Likewise with the hops, I'd like more presence.
I would also like more carbonation. The body is smooth and helping make this lightly carbonated ale go down easy. Clean, semi-sweet finish makes you eager to reach for another sip.
What we have here is an incredibly likable and easy to drink hybrid ale that I'm happy I grabbed on my last visit to Minnesota.
