Brewed to the Oud Bruin style with orange and lemon zest, then aged in Makers Mark barrels where the brewers added classic holiday fruits such as cranberries, figs, dates and raisins. Paying homage to the fruitcakes granny used to make with the only difference being, you won't want to re-gift this one!

Freaky, Bretty, Fruity, Savory

Take a classic Belgian style, add orange and lemon zest; then introduce Brettanomyces in the secondary fermentation, along with sour cherries, raisins, cranberries, figs, dates and currants. Throw in some spices, too. Yeah, this is an insane brew. There’s almost too much going on, but it works. And the Brett pulls through just enough to soften things up, complement the spice additions and add another dimension to this freak of a beer.

A - Pours a very dark amber with a fizzy dark tan head that is gone fast. A few ruby highlights are visable.

S - Very sweet ripe fruit, cherry, cranberry, raisins.

T - Sweet cherry, cranberry, raisin.

D - Low carbonation with a medium body.

O - Sweeet, and the Brett is lost. This is meh at best.

Served on tap into a snifter glass.

A- Poured a dark reddish brown with no head and no lace.

S- Very astringent nail polish aroma, some booze, and light fruity notes mostly of cherry.

T- Very astringent notes, nail polish, some lactic sourness, some cherry, cranberry, and it finishes with a strange bitterness.

M- Prickly carbonation, fuller bodied, a little boozy.

O- This just did not come together for me. The booziness was a little harsh and the astringency was too much for me. I was able to finish my glass, but nothing I would get again.

Poured from 375mL waxed & corked bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich red-brown hue with a dash of haze and a thin layer of tan foam with a suggestion of red tint. Very appropriate to the style and quite nice indeed.

Smell: tart with a sweet caramel and just a hint of fruitiness. Not overly complex, but quite nice.

Taste: moderate tartness with a rather sweet malt, but there is some deep, dark complexity here. Caramel, fruit, alcohol heat and a bit of a licorice character all combine to add something interesting. I like it.

Mouthfeel: a bit of a light body with a moderate carbonation and fizzy mouthfeel. Maybe not the best thing in the world, but appropriate to the style.

Overall: I like this beer's complexity, but something about it grates on me a little. Good, indeed, but perhaps not eminently drinkable.

Served in a pair of Deschutes tulips. 2013 and 2014 side-by-side

After aging for a year, the '13 has pours with a light head, but fairly persistent. The '14 pours without much head at all. The bourbon is much more pronounced in the '14, although still subtle. The fizz overwhelms it (and just about everything else) in the '13.

I'd had this beer a couple of times on tap and not been very impressed. It is a "project" beer. You need to sit down with it and give it an hour or two. Do that, and you won't be disappointed.

The beer pours a nearly flat very dark amber that appears black, but shows ruby red highlights at the edges of the glass. Extremely fruit nose. Orange at the forefront with rum soaked raisins, prunes and black currant. Cannot be sAid enough, very fruity nose. Dark sugar complexity in the background. Hints of spice including cinnamon and allspice, whether from barrel aging or actual use of the spices.

The taste is initially sweet giving way to dark fruits and following with a molasses and dark sugar sweetness. Too sweet really. The complexity in the nose turns into a muddled mess. Mouthfeel has a lower level of carbonation and gives the feel of a medium bodied beer.

Altogether an interesting and fruity beer that gets lost in the cloying sweet flavors.

375ml bottle shared during #bottlecherwednesday at Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach. Poured into tulip. Beer is clear dark amber with a tall khaki head that quickly collapses to nothing. Aroma is citrus, oak, spice, dried fruit, and brett funk. Taste is tart/sweet citrus and dried fruit, woody/nutty bitterness, and just a touch of bourbon heat. Medium bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation, and a long drying, warming finish.
