Flanders Oud Bruin |  10.50% ABV

Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: anteater on 12-04-2013

Brewed to the Oud Bruin style with orange and lemon zest, then aged in Makers Mark barrels where the brewers added classic holiday fruits such as cranberries, figs, dates and raisins. Paying homage to the fruitcakes granny used to make with the only difference being, you won't want to re-gift this one!

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #85 (Feb 2014):

Freaky, Bretty, Fruity, Savory

Take a classic Belgian style, add orange and lemon zest; then introduce Brettanomyces in the secondary fermentation, along with sour cherries, raisins, cranberries, figs, dates and currants. Throw in some spices, too. Yeah, this is an insane brew. There’s almost too much going on, but it works. And the Brett pulls through just enough to soften things up, complement the spice additions and add another dimension to this freak of a beer.

A - Pours a very dark amber with a fizzy dark tan head that is gone fast. A few ruby highlights are visable.

S - Very sweet ripe fruit, cherry, cranberry, raisins.

T - Sweet cherry, cranberry, raisin.

D - Low carbonation with a medium body.

O - Sweeet, and the Brett is lost. This is meh at best. (344 characters)

A: Pours a deep burgundy with a thin cream colored head. The head settles down to nothing pretty quickly.

S: A crazy mix of things going on here. Wet earth mixed with tons of dark fruit. Sour black cherry, plum, date, some jammy red wine grapes, sherry and just a touch of brett. I don't know that it all works together, but damn that's a lot going on.

T: I'm getting a lot of that jammy red wine I was getting from the smell. A good amount of black cherry juice and skin tartness, date, prune and maybe just a hint of dark chocolate. Leaves a lingering tart and dry chocolate covered black cherry skin finish with just a breath of brett. I don't know that I'd want to see what this turns into with a little age. Fresh, it's definitely worth a try though. (758 characters)
