On draught at Bailey's, Outcast is clear gold with a white head leaving scattered foamy lace.

Smell is skunky, dank hops.

Taste is bright, citrusy hops, some sweet tropical fruit and bubblegum notes as well. A little cereal sweetness as well as a hint of chalk, nice dept for being so light bodied, which I love. The hop flavors oddly contrast with the nose, citrus vs skunky, but combine, the whole range is there, and it adds to the complexity.

Mouthfeel is light, slick.

Drinkability is pretty high, nice light body, big hop flavor, and dangerously smooth. The sweetness of the hop flavor is perhaps a bit tiring, I wish more of the resin from the nose came across in the taste.

16.9 oz bottle, bottled on 4/7/14. Pours clear golden yellow with a medium frothy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is piney hops with a little fruit and some stinky tar.

The flavor is sweet bready malt with a little fruit and a big piney, grassy, tarry harsh bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice IPA. Not my favorite flavor profile.

I love this beer for the fact that it is interesting and that the hops are Australian. In terms of taste it is different, and that also makes me love it. It is pretty balanced, and the 8% abv is also good to go. There is nothing crazy about this beer, but it carries a high quality swagger with the taste that is fun to drink.

Bottle served cold into an imperial pint glass.

Outcast is a pale golden orange color with unusually good clarity for an imperial IPA. The head is thick at first but settles fairly fast leaving a little lace behind.

Aroma is fresh and full of bright citrus notes. Very hoppy but not overpowering.

Flavor is brilliantly hoppy with many layers and complexities. Citrus is most prevalent but there is also grassy, floral, and spice.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely carbonated. Beautifully balanced and expertly made.

Overall a wonderful double IPA and certainly worth seeking out. I'd love to try some of Crux's other beers. Their labels are excellent too.

Pours two fingers of head on a hazy straw body.
The aroma is bright with tropical fruits. Nice.
The taste is playful bitterness with a sweeter malt finish. Good balance and profile.
The texture is softer.
Unique smell and good flavor.

Thanks to Chris & Sharon for sharing their Portland bounty!
This was a highlight of the evening. Quick review from written notes.

Behold, the Pliny-Killa™!

Bright high clarity orange with some larger bubbles clustered on the surface.
Minimal spotty lacing, decent surface coverage.

Dank and sticky, tropical aromas of mango and tangerine from the Galaxy hops.

Juicy citrus flavors, earthy mango reappears, long bitter aftertaste of green hop botanicals. Light bodied with a clean bitterness, slight stickiness on the lips. To say this is very drinkable is an understatement, a growler would surely be no problem.
An everyday IPA of epic proportions. If only...

This beer has singlehandedly put the PacNW region back on the map in the IPA arena, imho.
Call me crazy.

A. Pours a pretty clear yellow-gold with a touch of orange and half a finger of white head.
S. Citrus and a bit of cedar, some sweet tropical fruits.
T. Sweet tropical fruits, some slightly woody/herbal hops. Good stuff.
M. Medium+ body, medium-low smooth carbonation. Very nice.
Overall. Maybe not so amazing on the nose, but good stuff.

Had this at Crux on Saturday night.. reviewed from paper notes.

Pours a hop hazed orange.... Long lasting white head with great lacing and retention.

The aroma is just bursting with citrus and tropical notes... Brenda says "passionfruit" ... I don't know what passionfruit tastes like, but I trust her.

Very clean bitterness... just enough residual maltiness to carry a sorta oily hoppiness... the flavors is again citrus zest and tropical fruits.

Body is maybe a bit heavy for a standard IPA... but so is the ABV.

Pretty damn good... Glad I got to try this one... I would have taken home a growler, but they were out of glass.

And thanks to all the very nice folks I met at Crux... Especially the gentleman behind the bar.

Poured into a Chuckanut pint glass. Pours a clear, medium golden amber with a nice two finger white head kept intact by constant carbonation; drinking eventually leaves thick lacing. Aroma of piney, citrus hops, pineapple and other tropical fruit, caramel malt. Flavor is sweet bready malt, citrus and pine hops with some light dankness, citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Very nicely integrated flavors with quite sturdy malt support. Medium bodied with a pleasant light creaminess. A nice hoppy, malty IPA that is not super hop bitter, but has plenty of herbal hop flavor. This is my second Crux IPA and I have to say I really like the balance and malt character of their ales. I will be drinking this again soon.

My first review so take it FWIW but I really enjoyed this beer.... A lot!. I've only been a BA lurker for about 5 months so I'm fairly new to the high end beer game. However I'm fortunate to have a few Headys, Abrasive, Sculpin, various stones, Lagunitas sucks, etc in the fridge and had a Pliny a few weeks ago.

My sister brought me a bottle of this from Portland for Christmas. She was looking for a Pliny to bring me but couldn't find one. The lady at the beer store recommended this saying she thought it was just as good and half the price. My sister told me this when she gave it to me but I was pretty skeptical. Needless to say that lady behind the counter might have been right

Reminded me very much of Pliny the Elder. Great taste and smell, but unbelievably easy to drink. Not quite as complex and tasty as Heady or Abrasive but I would trade the drinkability for that any day.

If I lived somewhere this was readily available it would be my go to any day!

Pint at "b2" tap-house in Salem Oregon. $4.50 Very light for a regular IPA golden yellow small white head? Real good aromas here though resiny, very herbal hops odd but nice. Taste very fresh very bitter very hoppy ,malts don’t have a look in. Kinda reminds me of New Belgium's Aramis IPA. Nice and very drinkable mouth feel this is 8%?? doesn't seem like it. Good beer definitely NOT a PNW style IPA!

T: Too much pine hop bitters without the malts to back it up. Also a bit hot. Prefer something more balanced.

On tap @ The Highland Stillhouse

Clear golden with a foamy white head.

Big citrusy, resiny hop notes, hides the ABV well, a very well done IPA.

S - Orange peel, bitter pine, a touch of bready malt.

T - Same as the nose - nice balanced IPA.

D - Good carbonation with a medium body.

O - Orange peel and bitter pine - more malty, but nice balance and easy drinking.

500mL into a tulip. Pours a slightly hazy straw color w/ a bright white head of foam.

Aroma is citrusy and tropical: pineapple, grapefruit, and clean pale malt.

Taste follows nose. Clean dry-hopped goodness on a canvas of neutral pale malt that lends just a touch of sweetness. Hop bitterness is there but it's kept in check. Highly drinkable.

Mouthfeel is balanced and crisp, finishes semi-dry.

Overall a rock-solid example of an American IPA, really enjoyable.

Clear yellow with decent foam and lots of lacing in the tall glass. Beautiful aroma of fruit and flowers. A light but warm malty flavor. The body is also light yet with enough substance to support the tangy hops. Sudsy mouthfeel with the billows of fine carbonation. Really a pleasant mouthful and a more drinkable style of IPA.

Distinctive hop flavors. Passionfruit, peach, and pine. Not as bitter as many IPAs. I see the label says bottled on August 12, '13, so it's less than a month out of the tank. I'll be looking for more beers from this brewery. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at Market of Choice on 29th in Eugene.

Nice golden color that is hazy with a little white head. Smells super awesome. Like a fresh pine tree. Taste and smell don't match up. You get a kick of the pine but there is also some other stuff going on. Maybe some malt. Good beer. I would drink it again. Been impressed by both beers I have had from Crux.

Pours a bright light catching brew with a full 3 finger whipped cream head. Dissipates as expected but leaves a nice reserve of lacing. Don't really expect this from an IPA, Usually this would come from a more Saison like brew.. Regardless makes me think this beer has been well crafted.
Aroma is complex but restrained, No big scents, but many subtle scents weaving together with melon, bitterness, citrus.
Taste is equally restrained with the excellent Galaxy hops. Wonderfully balanced. Full with fruit and a bit of woodiness.
Mouth feel is light but soft. Carbonation is soft/medium. More like a draft than a bottle. Very drinkable.
Side note: Have matched beer with a 3 year old XXX N.Y. Cheddar, and the flavors of the beer just explode out with food.
OK...understand that this is more than the beer...but I think it's just important to say that this beer is really good, but exceptionally good with a bit salinity and cream you'd get with a good stand up cheese.
Highly recommended.

It's fun to be able to write reviews like this. This beer is quite simply one of the best IPAs I've ever had. The smell upon opening is similar to that of Pliny the Elder--lots of citrus, but plenty of delicious hop aromas. The beer really opens up as it warms up. The flavor is very similar to the nose--heavy citrus, grapefruit, and pineapple balanced with bitter hops. The mouthfeel is honestly my favorite part--amazing how creamy and luscious the beer feels after coming from a bottle. I was even more pleasantly surprised at how good this was considering it was bottled in early August. Would love to get my hands on a fresher bottle to compare. All in all, this beer has lived up to the buzz going around in Portland, and can't wait to have it again.

Pours a clear, light orange color with a very nice, fluffy white head.

Nice combination of pine and citrus on the nose. Definite presence of grapefruit and other citrus essences with this one. Pretty powerful and notable aroma.

Really nice and full flavor here. There is a bit of a malt backbone, but the primary flavors have to do with hops and citrus bitterness. There is a bit of a pine resin-like taste as well. Nice crisp yet biting taste.

I would call this one a bit above medium carbonation, with a nice presence on the palate.

This is an excellent IPA. Very hoppy with a bit of malt, so it does have some balance to it. Great overall presence of fruit, hops, malt, pine makes this a classic IPA for me. A very worthy introduction to the Crux Fermentation Project for this BA.

16.9oz bottle served in a large snifter. Bottled on Jan 12 2015.

Pretty beer. Pours golden with a very, very slight haze; slightly amber, with a gorgeous white head that fades at a moderate pace. Smell is bright and juicy and hope cones, even when it's being absorbed by your shirt. On the plus side, this shirt now smells much better than my other shirts.

Taste is mild in comparison with the aroma. Still good, but not as bright. Not frighteningly sweet, not overly hoppy. A relatively balanced IPA.

Mouthfeel is smooth and pleasant. Slight dry finish. Overall, very nice beer.
