slight bourbon alcohol aroma, mid carbonation, sweet bitter balanced initially then a little bitter then sweet linger. Smooth, coffee and chocolate but more chocolate, can taste something else... It's the vanilla. Dark chocolate linger. Delicious. Later the linger is bourbon.

Shared a tulip on-tap (but drink most of it) after a sharing a flights at the brewery; Crux Fermentation Project, Bend, USA. As part of a six-week West Coast beer tour. I rate to taste, not to style. See my blog for more details:

After attacking that cork for 30 minutes and losing about 10% of the actual beer, it is finally open. Waxed, then capped, then a cork is shoved in there. bad, bad, bad move. I almost gave up and threw it away.

A: Perfectly black, very little red seen when you pour it. It has a nice brown head that sticks around and some beautiful lacing. It really doesn't get much prettier than this.

s: It smells wonderful, fruity, sweet, a little bit of bourbon, some chocolate, a nostalgic woody character that I cannot quite understand, but still smells great.

t: A subtle boozy, fruity, sweet character from the barrel right up front, which then goes back to a slight cocoa bitterness and some chocolate. Not very strong, very tasty.

mf: light carbonation, slightly viscous.

overall, a very, very good beer from Crux. This is right there with Parabola and the other big boys.
Don't miss out on the first bottling of Tough Love.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A: The beer pours a dark brown color with red rings around the edge. Nice tan of head foam is retained on the top.

S: Notes of red wine, coffee and bourbon are apparent.

T: The coffee and some vinuous touches are very forward, with a bit of bourbon lingering in the background.

M: Thick and full-bodied but not overpowering.

O: Great first barrel-aged brew from the guys at Crux. Interested to see what these bottles do in another six months or so.

Beautiful beer -- slick and jet black. Nice tannish-brown head on it.

All roasty chocolate in the nose. No real sign of the bourbon or oak.

A bit of sweet molasses upfront and some light spice (probably from the rye), followed by a big wave of dark, bitter chocolate. The bourbon is subtle and in the background, just where I like it to be. Not picking up a ton of oak. A little bit of booze on the finish, but I wouldn't call it hot. Some time is going to help it for sure, though.

Great mouthfeel -- not overly thick and syrupy like some in this class can be. Nice carbonation keeps it from feeling overly viscous.

Great beer. With some time on it, look out.

On tap at the Bier Stein the other day.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and lacing. The beer is every bit as attractive on the nose, as I pick up considerable dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, light coffee, light leather and light tobacco. The flavor profile replcates the nose pretty closely, with the dark chocolate, bourbon and vanilla seeming to dominate the flavor profile. The beer is moderately sweet, but there's enough hoppy bitterness on the finish to dry out the modest sweetness. Mouthfeel is fairly full and soft, and the finish is long with some light bitterness. Alcohol is very well integrated into the flavor profile; there's no sense of heat or heaviness on the finish.

Very nice RIS, but I'm not sure it's quite up there with beers like the Abyss and Super Nebula.

A: Poured a nice jet black with a nice tan cap, some good retention going on here.

S: Nose is dominated by bourbon, coffee and cocoa. A wee bit of vanilla and a pronounced booze sting

T: Coffee, rich milky chocolate and dark fruits upfront with stinging bourbon, booze blended with this. The booze was pretty sharp, the finish had a nice bittering and stinging finish

M: Full bodied, well carbonated, pretty dry and hot but very flavorful and it sits well on the palate

O: Pretty darn good if I say so myself. I wish i could find more. Thanks Libbey for getting me drunk and not taking advantage of me.

Thanks go out to Rbald42 for sending this one my way.

Appearance: Pours out a moderately viscous looking, almost inky black color. A good 1" of espresso head forms, which has excellent retention and decent lacing. Pretty high carbonation for the style is noted showing on the edges of the glass. Really nice looking stout.

Smell: This one took a while to open up, as I poured it cold. Once it begins to though, some nice scents begin to come out. A fair amount of roast and espresso are prevalent. Perhaps a bit of dark chocolate sweetness. Woodiness, vanilla and bourbon show from the barrel as well. Nice balance of bitter and sweet it seems on the nose.

Taste: Sweet and bitter dark chocolate makes up the bulk of the malt flavors in this stout. It takes an interested turn after that, that I did not catch on the nose. Some nice dark fruit character peeks out, with hints of cherry, fig and raisin. A notable amount of vanilla, with some oakiness and hints of bourbon round this out. More wood and vanilla show than actual bourbon notes, which are understated.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Medium-full bodied, with a high amount of carbonation, which combines to make an incredibly smooth and soft mouthfeel. Overall, one of the better stouts I have had recently. Nice balance, although I would not have minded to see a bit more bourbon character.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Very thick and dark. Stains the glass. Nice. Not much by way of a head.

Smell - Very nice bourbon. Vanilla. The oak is the best part though. Rich dark chocolate. Slight smoke.

Taste - Less intense on the bourbon. Rich chocolate. Oak is strong. A little too strong. The bottle says spices and I can see that if it's true. Licorice and some red wine notes in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Heavy and rich. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - Complex. Better aroma than taste, but not by much.
