Notes/Commercial Description:
C.A.F.E. Sour brings a new twist to the already popular world of coffee beers. Keeping with Christopher’s favorite coffee’s from Ethiopia, the beer is made with beautiful Ethiopian Yrgicheffe provided by Plowshares Coffee Roasters in Hillburn, NY. In keeping with an overall Ethiopian theme, Whole Grain Teff and Gesho Leaves & Sticks were used. Teff is a staple grain of Ethiopia used in their sourdough bread called Injera. And Gesho is used for bittering in the traditional Ethiopian beer “Tella”.

We wanted to push the boundaries of creativity. Since Teff is used in sourdough bread, we thought: why not make a sour beer?

The end product results in a truly unique coffee-inspired experience: light in color and body, with an Earthy flavoring from the coffee that blends wonderfully with the exotic flavors from the sour beer. A refreshing and delightful beer for the summer ahead.

This one was tough to rate because of the odd style, but i think they hit exactly what they were going for, as absurd as the idea was.

S- freshly roasted coffee beans.. Like what you smell in the coffee section of whole foods
A- gold, lots of head
T- almost like a well executed berliner Weiss, subtle background notes of coffee. Very welcome
M- light body, spot on carbonation
O- really unexpectedly liked this one, must try

I had this on tap at brewery.

A: A gold, amber color

S: Coffee. And a damn good coffee.

T: A bit of coffee with a lot of sour. Easily one of the best and most enjoyable tastes I've had in a long while.

M: Moderate carbonation

O: A great, great beer. I have never had a sour beer before. I most certainly will try some more and especially this one.

A: Cloudy bronze color with big frothy white head. Orange-honeycomb appearance. Murky like dirty pond water if you want the glass half empty appearance, but if you google 'Tella'-the Ethiopian beer they were mimicking this is spot on.

S: Fresh ground coffee dominates and a bit impenetrable. Citrus notes, lemon yerba mate, herbal, medicinal, spice lurk in the background.

M: Light-bodied. Low to medium carb. Nice astringent finish.

T/O: Blast of roasted coffee grounds, tangy flower notes-hibiscus, tangerine, bitter cocoa, spicy earth and woody tones-sasparilla. Sourness interacts with the bitter well. More like a coffee spiced tea in many respects.

A real nice summer sipper. Would be a perfect substitute for you r favorite iced coffee/tea. Carries many of the same notes, but with some added sour, and the lovely carbonation from the this beer making process. Would like to see this coffee used in a stout recipe.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: Arrives with a nice head of foam capping the amber liquid; gobs of lacing are left behind

Smell: Blend of coffee and sour elements

Taste: The coffee and sour elements compete on the front end but the finish brings a bit of toffee sweetness into the profile

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: Refreshing and different - a crazy idea, perhaps, but it works

Its nice to find beers like this that don't necessarily fit a description or category. Quit frankly this beer is amazing. Not only one of my favorites done by the boys at Newburgh, but it could be my beer of the year.

Appearance: The beer pours tan to light brown with a one finger head and good lacing

Aroma: Coffee and sour are dominate with other earthy aroma's lurking in the back ground.

Taste: Definitely taste the combination of coffee and sourness up front and throughout with more biter/sourness at the end. It really makes you want to take another sip almost immediately.

Mouth-feel: Light in body with good carbonation. This beer is very drinkable and refreshing.

Overall: This is one of the few sour beers I have had and its also one of the few (Non-stout) coffee beers that I have had and the combination is amazing. Not exactly session-able at 5.2%, but not a heavy hitter either. I could drink this beer all day and not just because of the high caffeine levels. I definitely recommend searching out this beers. Cheers!
