Pours a dark chocolate color. Aroma is coffee a little bitterness and sweetness. Flavor is coffee and roasted malts. Has hoppy bitterness and reminds me of a black IPA. Has a nice feel and overall very solid.

Poured into a Haw River Farmhouse Ales teku glass. Bottleneck says Bottled On 10/02/12...whoops.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/4 inch light brown head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a small center patch of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves tiny specs behind.

S- Big chocolate aroma with heavy dark roast.

T- The chocolate continues and is accompanied by some char and a hint of smoke. No coffee to speak of, but one can't possibly expect a nearly three year old bottle to still have it be present. Bitter, roasty, slightly boozy. There is this lull in flavor mid-palate that I attribute to the aging causing some fading. But it's semisweet in front and has a bit of vanilla in the finish.

M- Semi-creamy with medium-low carbonation and a full body.

O- Well I'm actually pretty glad I didn't check the date at the store because I wouldn't have bought this very good beer. It bears a good deal of complexity and has all the flavors I look for in a high-octane porter. No coffee, but oh well. Now I can revisit a fresher bottle later and compare notes. And now I can let you all know that this beer ages quite well.

Comes out of the bottle a deep sable barely a flea’s eyebrow above black with a thick and rather persistent tan head. Smoky aroma has firm coffee and, interestingly, hoppy notes. Flavor has tones of hops, coffee and chocolate plus some woody hoppy hints. Smooth texture has good body and fizz, and some sass. Wherever you have it, a good one!
