22oz bomber sent to me from dope (thanks man!) split with one of my brothers and poured into a tulip-shaped nonic.

A: Dark body, nearly black with a small amount of creamy light brown head.

S: Great coffee aromas, moderate fresh-pressed coffee grounds and a light sweetness. Light-to-medium roast coffee. Small doses of chocolate and roasted malt, and extremely light hints of smoke that balances nicely.

T: Really nice flavors here with lightly roasted fresh coffee, dark roasted malts, some dark caramel & brown sugar sweetness with suggestions of mocha that evolve into straight up milk chocolate. Roast is more prominent on the finish with an espresso bitterness.

MF: Creamy medium body with perfect carbonation and a lightly dry finish. Alcohol is well hidden.

O: Very good coffee beer! Not over-the-top bitter or dark, with plenty of good flavors in the palate (brown sugar and some chocolate for sure). Couldn't find much oatmeal, but overall this is a winner.

Pours a very dark brown, just colour around the edge up to the light. Head is ochre, speckly, with decent bubbles. Lacing is not that great, but otherwise looks like a nice stout or porter.

Smells hugely coffee-esque. Very bitter spice, lots of earthy spice notes, almost vegemitey and yeasty. Nice heavy bitterness, but ultimately just oddly yeasty. At times, at least. First smell is quite good.

Tastes bitter, nice roasty notes with a touch of espresso. More the roast aspects of coffee though and none of the spicy complexity. Slight nuttiness on there, decent most of the way with dark bitterness underlying it all. There's a slight unpleasantness to that dark bitterness, but otherwise fairly well-balanced, and tastes OK.

Decent body, bit dry; feels OK for the most part.

Nice porter, but could use a touch more malt coming through, just feels very bitter and otherwise the yeast just shows through a bit too much.

22oz brown bomber purchased from Jane's Beer Store in Mountain View, CA. Brought back to Sydney and shared with Sam.

Pours a lovely rich dark brown colour, with a fine head of mocha that leaves little sprigs of tight lace. Body is thick and nicely heavy; it leaves a beautiful set of streaky carbonation. Really beautiful look to it.

Nose is also really lovely. Tight, toasty richness with overtones of coffee and nut bread, and a slightly dusty, perhaps peppery tone that gives it a leavened character. Plenty of solid nutty sweetness underneath as well—it's a really very genuinely good aroma.

Taste is also good. Smooth, rich sweetness with a pronounced savoury nuttiness that develops into a roasty bite on the back. Middle has some smoothness from the malt, and a full palate that really helps the complexities develop. A touch of smoke and almost a vinous character on the back palate help sustain some of the richer more broad tones of the roast. It's really quite pleasant stuff.

Feel is lovely and smooth, with a bite from the roast.

Overall, this is a really lovely brew, and I'll be honest, I didn't quite expect it to be this good. It has the richness on the palate to support a lot of complexity, and while the complexity is subtle, it is certainly present. It gives a lot of nuanced style to a beer that could have been pretty by-the-numbers. Really very good stuff.

Pours a dark brown, almost black, with minimal head retention and minimal carbonation.

The nose contains distinct coffee notes but there is definitely some cocoa present as well.

There's a bit of booziness upon sipping but the dominant flavor is of roasted coffee beans. It finishes bitter, but not like an IPA, rather like a cup of strong black coffee tinged with alcohol.

I wouldn't recommend this for someone just starting to get into beer but I really enjoyed it and it is one of the better coffee stouts I've had. It's strong but not overwhelming and just full of flavor. The alcohol is present in the taste but only just (though I will say I felt it's effects more than anticipated).

Bottom line: if you like stouts, definitely give it a try; if you have a taste for coffee, you'll likely enjoy it; and, if you are just looking to experiment a bit with bold flavored brews, this is a good one to look into.

Brash Texas Exile "ale brewed with coffee" and "Mercury brewing" on the humorous label.

A: Light brown head over a near black body. Lacing coats the glass.

S: Coffee and caramel dominate the aroma which also has a hint of toffee.

Coffee and dark roasted malts dominate the flavor, with good balance ... meaning the roasted grains dominate the coffee. The coffee is obvious but not overdone in the lingering aftertaste either. Rich but a bit lacking in complexity. Pleasantly boozy aftertaste.

O: very good. 10.5% ABV is very well hidden.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a rather large brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of dry coffee notes with some floral undertones and some light dry roasted malt notes are also noticeable. Taste is also dominated by some floral dry coffee notes with some dry roasted bitter malt notes. Body is quite full with nice creamy texture with some good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Nice use of floral coffee notes with solid porter base.

22 ounce bottle, bottled on 11/28/12. Guess I'll find out if I should have drank this one sooner or not, I've had this bottle for about 6 months now and just haven't got around to drinking it until tonight. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that sticks around a while. There's also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like coffee, roasted malt, milk and bittersweet chocolate, and some brown sugar. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also some burnt/charred malt, and a bit of a mineral flavor noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and creamy with a decent amount of carbonation. After a year, I think this has held up pretty well. I liked it a lot, it's a good coffee beer. It's nice and roasty. Next time I'd like to to try a fresher bottle of this. $10.49 a bomber.
