This stout is the best I have ever had. It kicks the crap out of guinness, hands down the best beer at Otto's as well. It has a very dry, bitter coffee like flavor and mouthfeel. but very smooth on the back end. I can easily hammer this beer any time of year. If you are in happy valley and you like stout you need to visit Ottos and have one or ten! You wont be disappointed.

Had on tap at the brew pub served in a pint glass.

Appearance – The black as night nitro driven beer forms a beautiful white head which cascades through the dark brew giving a nice, just off white, foam head with very nice retention. A thing of beauty in a beer.

Smell – Roasted malts and dark chocolate are the first to be encountered. While the two dominate the nose, a faint bit of sweetness works its way at the end.

Taste – The flavor of roasted malts give a nice very nutty-toasty taste. The cocoa flavor then develops shortly after, complementing the roasted notes very nicely. The nutty, toasty malt with chocolate overtones then sweetens ever so slightly toward the end of the tasting, with hints of vanilla swirled into the other more dominant flavors. A very nice balance. Nothing overpowers too much, but the important flavors shine at just the right time.

Mouthfeel – Creamy to say the least. The perfectly formulated nitro driven body combined with the wonderfully balanced and non overpowering lighter malt body makes for a very smooth drinking experience. So wonderfully smooth, light and refreshing; the silk of the beer world.

Overall – This is one of the best beers I have ever had and will continue having. I have tasted this many times before and every time I have it I am surprised at how wonderfully creamy, tasty, light and satisfying it is. For anyone out there this is a must try.

Had this on tap at the brew pub today wile on our way home from celebrating Christmas with the family.

Look: The appearance was very rich and creamy - black in color with a large dense mocha colored nitro head.

Smell: Aroma lended typical roasted malts and dark chocolate. There were slight esters of lactose - unexpected for a dry stout.

Taste: The mouth-feel was thicker and first - then became watery as the nitro bubbles dissipated. Roasted malts with a watery semisweet dark chocolate and faint hints of molasses made up most of the palate. The finish wasn't very dry for the style, and seemed fairly clean, disappointing.

Overall, I would certainly have this again the next time I find myself back at Otto's during the winter months. I don't think the brew exactly represented the style, but it was certainly pleasant and complimented the Cuban pulled porch sandwich I paired it with.

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2008 On tap - Nov 4, 2007. Aroma is a gentle salt of chocolate and roast. Rather subdued. Pours a pitch black, ruby corner and a finger of nitro tan head. Flavor is calm, classic presentation with sea oats, barley bread, and blackened toast. A classic Guinness rendition right down to that little lactic twang. It has more body, structure and rigidity, but still rather shallow in being stunningly drinkable. Not much more depth. Finishes on a bland brown sugar note. As expected.

Imagine my shock, I'd never had Black Mo before. All the trips to Otto's and never once the signature stout. Let's rectify that immediately.

A: The stout, a nitro pour, comes out beautifully. An ebon body, dark as night, with a dense foamy white head standing in stark contrast. The nitro head leaves plenty of pretty lacing behind.

S: The nose is that of an Irish stout, dark malts, chocolate and a bit of cream alongside a minerally element. That minerally presence screams Irish to me.

T: A very mild stout, I'd like nothing more than choking back a few. The chocoloate (cocoa and milk chocolate) is firm and sits nicely with darker malts. The body is very light for being so dark. Behind the initial malty blast, the minerals come through, a soda water feel that sustains the ale without allowing it to get too strong. Creaminess returns for the finish, although it isn't a lactose creaminess. A good quaffer.

M: Appropriate, the mouthfeel is generally dry. The darker malts aren't forboding and each sip goes down as easily as the one before it.

Tasting notes from 1-13-11
On tap at the brewpub.

A - Black with 2 fingers of creamy light brown head. Looks like guinness. Toook a minute to settle.

S - Some bitterness up front. Some coffee and chocolate. Not as strong a nose as I expected.

M - Smooth, creamy, silky, full bodied. Light carbonation.

T - Roasted malts, chocolate, toasted nuts. 4.5

D - A great stout

Served in a standard pint glass from a nitro tap at the brew pub. Very active 3 finger mocha head that lasts pretty much forever. Lots of lacing present as I consume the brew. The body is a dark brownish black color that only allows light in around the edges when help up at eye level.

The nose is what you would expect from an irish stout...chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts.

The taste is similar to the nose...coffee up front that gives way to the chocolate/caramel characters. Finishes a little on the bitter side...like a mouthful of black coffee.

The mouth feel is medium and slightly drying.

Very drinkable...a good example of the style.

Served in a pint glass; very dark coffee colored beer with a small tan colored head. Beer had a roasted nutty scent, with some malty overtones. Taste was initially of roasted grain and nuts, however the middle seemed a little thin. Beer had a slightly sweet finish as well.

On nitro-tap at Otto's on 1/3/09.

A - Beautiful cascading nitro pour with a full finger's width of creamy tan head atop a black body with nut brown accents. Head held on like a champ and yielded some decorative lacing.

S - Initial aroma is of dark roasted malt with hints of chocolate and coffee. The nose also suggests a touch of earthy bitterness, although the hops are well-concealed and relegated to the background.

T - Dark roasted malt with a touch of earthy hop bitterness to complement. Coffee and chocolate notes emerge in the finish.

M - Medium body, perhaps a tad thin for a stout, with a creamy, smooth texture with subtle carbonation. Finish is dry with a dash of bitterness on the palate.

D - Black Mo Stout is axcellent example of a classic dry Irish stout with plenty of flavor and a smooth nitro mouthfeel to boot.

A- almost pitch black, just a hint of brown in the edge. Tan brown head of about a finger that lasted the entire pint.

S- Malty chocolaty coffeey goodness. not too much though.

T- So good. nice roasty malty. What I want in a stout for sure. Had a stout craving all week and this filled it for sure.

M/D- I could sit there and drink these all day.

A Pitch Black in color, no light comes through. Perfect slightly brownish off-white head, thanks to the nitro-tap. Head is about a finger and a half and lasts the whole way through.

S Perfect balance of chocolate and dark fruits. Just the right mix of dark cherries, plums, possibly a touch of black berry, chocolate and caramel.

T Ultra smooth head that sets the beer up perfectly for the onset of the darker fruits mentioned above. The flavors are really bold but, but not overpowering, and are so well balanced amongst each other, that it's hard to be impressed.

I just wish I could get some bottled and take it home with me..

The beer pours a deep, dark black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a dry, earthy, black malt scent that boasts of patent malt and non malted roasted barley. The taste is good as well. It has a smooth black malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes thin with a really nice earthy/coffee-like taste. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a very good beer. It's true to style and well brewed.

Enjoyed on nitro-tap at the brewpub. Aroma of roast and licorice. Black with a thick creamy head. The taste is nitro malt, rast, and lots of burnt charred roast. Thick lacing. Creamy mouthfeel, there is sourness well offset by the malting. It's drinkable.

Had on draft at Otto's Pub, State College, PA.

A- Pours a deep brown, almost opaque and black, with a nice thick tan head.

S- Smells of roasted barley and coffee, slightly malty.

T- Strong coffee and roasted barley, slightly malty sweet at first but finishes nice and dry.

M- Nice and smooth, due in large part to the nitrogen, full bodied.

D- A very drinkable stout, reasonably low alcohol, and well balanced.

This beer is similar to Guinness in terms of appearance, taste and texture (both obviously being a nitro-tap). Black Mo is flavorful without being overpowering which makes it highly drinkable. It's extremely smooth.
It's served year round and is a great conversational beer.

on tap

pours jet black with a nitro induced creamy head of light brown

aroma is slight but correct for the style with no hops apparent, but a bit of strong chocolate.

flavor is just a bit sweeter than Guinness and Beamish and without the sour twang of the famous one.

big mouthfeel and lots of flavor - dark, dark choc and some espresso

finish lingers and is mostly medium sweet.

a very nice local.

This beer was brewed in the style of an Irish Stout, not an American Stout.

Pours very dark brown with a large, light tan, creamy head with excellent retention. Very attractive, intricate lacing. The smell is of mellow roasted malts invoking aromas of chocolate, coffee and charcoal. The taste is malty and smooth with a light sweetness and flavors of chocolate and grain. It has a lightly dry finish, medium-full body and silky texture. Maybe a little bit thin for my taste, but it’s a very easy drinking, well-rounded beer, that I enjoyed

Arrived a (too cold) black/opaque with the typical attractive cascading you get from a nitro-tap stout. Beautiful tight head of tan foam. Drops to a good coating and a ring. Very good lacing. A pretty beer.

Aroma is dominated by black malt and roasted black coffee. A faint smell of citrusy/grassy hops can be picked up if you work hard.

Flavor is clean and crisp roasted barley and coffee, a fairly low level of hop bitterness, and some residual sweetness. A very low level of flowery hop flavor can be detected. Aftertaste is a little thin, but crisp and refreshing.

Mouthfeel is smooth but crisp and kind of dry. On style. Carbonation is very soft. Finish is dry.

I could drink this all day. This is refreshing as hell, tasty and clean. A fine dry stout.
