Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: morimech on 04-20-2013

A malt-forward IPA dry hopped with a shipload of raw, whole hops. This IPA defines “extreme balance”. An extreme malty sweetness on the front end with a huge hop bitterness to finish clean.

I have had this on tap at the Pig & fiddle, Moto I and Muddy Waters.
A: Bright gold under a 1” rocky foam cap. S: malt and citrus.
T: Graham cracker, light caramel, finishing citrus rind hop bitterness.
F: Creamy, medium full body and medium carbonation.
O: An easy to drink strong ale.

Pours a dark amber color with one finger of head that had good retention before settling to a thin cap. Moderate amount of spotty lacing is left down the glass.

Aroma is not that appealing. Has a bit of a antiseptic, bleach, band-aid smell. Smells like the brewery after cleaning. Once you get past that initial smell, some nice malty aromas come into play. Not much for appealing hop aroma.

Much better tasting. Hoppy and bitter but plenty of malt sweetness to balance things out. I pick out citrus and tropical fruit, with caramel and dark fruit from the malt. Finishes on the slightly bitter side with a lingering grainy aftertaste.

Has a bigger body for a beer of this ABV level. Also well carbonated which is slightly surprising for an Excelsior growler.

They backed off the IPA claim and for good reason. Good balance of flavors. Now if they could just do something about the aroma. Like all of their beers, it is flawed in some way.

Bottle says 14302, which, if it's a Julian date, means bottled on 29 October 2014. Tasted 4 January 2014.

Pours cloudy pale golden yellow. One finger white head, okay retention and decent lacing.

Smell is nondescript, almost absent. Just not much there. Some faint herbal notes, but that's about it.

Taste leans more towards bad than good. It's a bit off, with a sort of juicy fruitiness that doesn't belong, before it tilts toward a soft bitterness. I wouldn't even guess it were an IPA if the label didn't tell me so. The flavors are dull, and what is there doesn't impress.

Feel is actually quite good. Medium body, buzzy carbonation. Fades out pretty quickly right when it want it to.

Everything I've had from Excelsior has been mediocre. This is no different.

A-Gold colored....white lace...white head....good carbonation level.

S-Kind of an odd, musty aroma at first....maybe some overripe (rotten?) tropical fruits like papaya and mango as well....

T-There's some overripe tropical fruitness to this...candied like sweetness...hint of floral like hops....low on the bitterness.

M-Slightly sour on the finish....medium to full bodied..

O-Doesn't taste like an IPA. It's drinkable but for the $ I spent on this bomber it was not a wise purchase.

Oxidized whole hops, creating cheesy aroma and flavors!
Also, metallic, off-putting flavor.

Really bad! Really hard to louse-up an IPA.

Portends a lot about a brewery.
