Appearance: A slight gusher from the bottle and pours out all hat and no cattle; eventually, the head recedes to show an amber (surprise!) colored liquid; needless to say, the glass was coated with lacing

Smell: Chai spices abound, with cinnamon, ginger and cloves dominant

Taste: As with the aroma, the Chai spices dominate the front end, with the black pepper emerging after the swallow; sweet and herbal, almost medicinal, through the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: The smell is nice, if you like Chai tea, but the flavor profile is a bit unbalanced and I didn't care for the finish

Pours clear dark brown with slight head, smells like carrot cake and slight licorice with a light mouthfeel, this is a great ale for the colder seasons.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #72 (Jan 2013):

Very aromatic, reminiscent of chai tea. Well spiced but continues to remind our palates that this is a beer. Definitely one of the more drinkable spiced beers out there. A perfect example of what extreme beer can be, something fun and drinkable without ripping you palate to shreds.

STYLE: Spiced Ale
ABV: 5.2%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Hazed rusty amber, tight tan head

SMELL: Gingerbread, cinnamon, clove, mild caramel, faint alcohol, peppercorn, plumy

TASTE: Toasty, very smooth, black pepper, slightly bitter, bread crust, ginger, clove, cinnamon, piney, earthy, hint of sweetness, mildly pungent drying finish

Poured from the bottle into a medium sized snifter glass.

Deep amber red, nearly mahogany brown with some good clarity. A nice easy two finger light tan head makes and appearance with some thin bubbles. Creamy consistency, some small finger lacing and creamy collar.

Woah this nose is impressive. Literally smells like gingerbread, perfectly. Nutmeg and brown sugar and cookie dough. Not overly sweet either, with classic clove and Christmas like spices. Just incredible.

Palate comes a little less impressive but still manages to deliver. Milky skim mouthfeel in the mid palate, but with some of the watery spices coming through. More tea and nutmeg action and green hop herbality mixing in. Milky finish on the aftertaste, with some cool mint like hop character interestingly. Tannic tea like after taste and herbal aromas to come in nicely, sumac, sage, and black tea air to match.

It's palate flavor is memorable, but a bit not that perfectly showcased. It easily though could pass off as a great Christmas brew interestingly, with a very unique twist.

A: 3.75 - Very dark amber beer with a light but frothy head.
S: 3.5 - Sweet caramel malt mostly. I thought I caught a whiff of spiciness, but I couldn't smell it twice.
T: 4.0 - Like the smell, a strong initial sweetness with some notes of cocoa, followed by some interesting spiciness, though I can't identify it at all--it's an interesting bitter flavor with a little tartness, a tad vegetal. (oh, just looked at bottle and I see it identifies them. I don't get the saigon cinnamon (which is usually super cinnamony) , but the cardamom makes sense, as does the pepper, and the pepper detectable. I'm bumping up my initial flavor because it's a blend that's more than the sum of the parts.)
M: 3.75 - Soft texture, creamy
O: 4.0 - Very interesting beer, though one I'm unlikely to buy again.
