I took the train down from Bamberg to the Buttenheim station (which is actually in Altendorf) and walked the 1.5 km walk (uphill most of the way) to Markt Str. It was a bit hard to find, but now that I know where it is, it is easy. The walk was about 30 minutes going, and about 20 minutes returning to the train station. I was disappointed to find that Löwenbräu was closed (because their keller was open), but I just went next door to St. Georgenbräu. It was quite busy on this Autumn afternoon, but I managed to find a seat in the middle of a long table.

The pub is a large rectangular room with the serving bar on your right as you enter. The walls and ceiling are painted in soft yellow with dark brown wooden beams in the ceiling, and wood on the walls, as well as the floors and tables (light colored wooden tables in the Franconian style). Curtained windows look out over flower boxes to the street.

They offered 4 beers on-tap (vom Faß):
Kellerbier, Vollbier (Helles), Pils, and Weizen

And 5 beers in bottles:
Landbier, Weizen Dukel, Weizen Leicht, Schwarzbock, and Alkoholfreis.

I enjoyed a bottle of the Landbier as well as a krug of the famous kellerbier, which were both very good and fresh. The beer prices were good: € 1.90 to € 2.50 for 500 mL. They had bottled beer for sale to take out, as well as a boxed set of a beautiful stein krug plus two bottles of beer for approximately € 9.00 . In retrospect, I wish I had bought one of these krugs.

The service was good, though slow during this busy time. The food that I sampled was good, and judging by the locals it seems to be a popular place to bring the family to eat.

Overall, definitely worth the visit, and worth the hike from the train station (be sure to check the schedules so as not to miss the last train back to where you came from). Try to combine a visit with Löwenbräu next door.
