A new beer from Baraboo, and consequently my first from them. Apparently this is either contracted out to Hy-Vee Stores exclusively or its their brand. I guess I'm not sure. We'll see how this pans out.
Appearance (4) : Pours out of the bottle a beautiful amber hue; in the glass I'm welcomed with a three finger, fairly tight knit head, on top of a fiery orange glow for a body. The opacity and depth is about 50%, I can still see images through it but not text. The head seems to be sticking around and leaves lacing rings around the glass, so I feel confident to give this category a 4.
Aroma (4.25) : Hey, bonfire is right. It's got some smokey and sappy char wood aromas along with the traditional wheat and malt smells. There's also some honey and a big presence of rich log cabin-type maple syrup. I'm giving this category a 4.25 because it's so unique and tantalizing. This is like a fire on a cold Octobers' night in the plains. These guys are nailing the demographic right.
Taste (3.75) : A punch of sour maple and dough mixture right off the bat, with some of the char and smoke poking through. It also sports a robust cracker body. The aftertaste lingers with maple and biscuit. Unique, but fair, even good possibly. I'm teetering between 3.75 and 4, but I'm gonna humble this one and say 3.75.
Mouthfeel (3.5) : Here's where it gets a little weird. The first part of the body is watery, in fact the majority of it is. In the middle some spicy (yes I said spicy) carbonation seems to erupt volcanically in the mouth. After I swallow, the tip of my tongue is left buzzing. Not sure what that's all about. It ends semi-dry.
Overall (3.97) : I have to give this beer props for being unique. In fact, if I grew tired of all the other Marzens out there that tend to be so similar, I would pick up a sixer of Baraboo and call my friends and say, "hey, guys...come check this out. It's different from other Marzens, I promise." The smoke and char really set it apart, as well as the maple, and finally the "tongue buzzing" sensation from the mouthfeel. I don't know whether to call that a defect or an extraordinary trait. Regardless of how you view it, the Baraboo Bonfire is worth a hard look.

Sampled on 6/5/14 and is only available at Hy-Vee grocery stores. Bottled chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a glass boot.
Pours a pretty copper-amber in color with a good 2+-finger off white foamy head. A good amount of lacing is seen with each sip. The aroma isn't too strong but is of sweet caramel malts, yeast, with a hint of floral. The taste is even better with the above flavors coming through with a hint of butterscotch and a slight tangy finish. Goes down easy and is tasty. Perfect carbonation for this type of brew.
