Poured from bottle. Aroma has hints of caramel and toast. Appearance is a slightly cloudy amber. Medium bitter in taste. Medium body and oily texture. A nice English ale.

This beer poured with an incredible amount of foamy head....I only got 1/4 of the bottle poured into a shaker pint glass. Retention was good, I was left with at least two fingers of foam after half an hour of sipping. There was very little lacing down the sides of the glass.

Appearance was a fairly cloudy, orange-amber. Looked much more like an IPA to me. Smell was difficult to evaluate due to the massive head, but there were some citrus notes. Mouthfeel was smooth, carbonation was restrained. Taste was very much like an IPA, with a good amount of citrus-y hops and a nicely bitter finish.

I'm not sure what to make of this, since it was pretty clearly not an ESB. Perhaps Hell Bay has changed their recipe since the last reviewer? I would view it as a hoppy English Pale Ale or perhaps even an IPA, and a good one at that. A solid beer that I will search out again, if only to find out what is in the bottle next time!

Bottle from Premier Wines & Spirits in Halifax, NS. Bottling date not clearly marked, though I drank it a few weeks after purchase.

A: Copper with an off-white head, thin ring of retention.

S: Pleasant fruity esters, slightly grainy, hint of hops (fuggles?).

T: This really reminds me of Fuller's ESB, though not quite as a big & flavourful... more sessionable? It really tastes like Fuller's yeast, great fruity character. Malt is a bit grainy, nicely balanced bitterness, UK hops on the finish.

M: Light to moderate body has a modest carbonation.

O: Overall it's a pleasantly drinkable bitter... not as big as some ESB's, but more flavour than the lighter session bitters.
