I was looking forward to this beer. All I can is that making your beer less accessible does not automatically put it on the scale of Heady Topper. I love supporting local breweries; in fact, I would prefer to drink local. It amazes me that local purveyors already have this on an "invite only" e-mail distribution. Brewed with 3 different hops and balanced by a dry malt characteristic, I'm not feeling the balance at all on this one. It subdues the citrus-like hops that are trying to break through. It finishes peppery, just like their single IPA and I think that it takes from the overall experience. In a market watered down by the next great IPA, this one misses the mark due to its failure to marry the hop/malt profile. It's not a bad beer by any stretch, but being my favorite style, it misses the mark.

Reminiscent of Gandhi-bot in some ways, but this beer does not achieve the same level of balance as NEBCo's flagship.

Pours a coppery orange with slight haze. Didn't lace much in my glass (which was cleaned properly) but who really cares. A decent fingers worth of head that receded in less than a minute.

Aroma mix is that of caramel malt sweetness, bitter citrus, mild peach note, and the expected pine hit. I don't get the resinous quality that other reviewers have picked up. Unlike other DIPAs I've tried it doesn't change much as the beer warms and you pretty much get the full expression when it's cracked open at fridge temperature.

Flavors are skewed towards hop bitterness, with the malt backbone being a little more in the background than I like for an east coast IPA. I guess it's a bit of a one trick pony in the flavor department. It's nice, if you're in the mood for bitterness this is your huckleberry.

Mouthfeel is lively due to the carbonation level, which keeps the malt sugars at bay somewhat. My favorite imperials feature a citrus "chew" that I adore, which was lacking somewhat in this beer.

Would I order one of these in a bar? Absolutely. Would I go far out of my way to score a four pack at a package store? Probably not. But this beer is worth trying and Back East is doing good things for the CT beer scene.
