Notes/Commercial Description:
Misty Mountain is a great example of the American-style India Pale Ale synonymous with Craft Beer. Originally brewed for sailors on shipping routes between England and India, British IPAs are known for their strong hop bitterness, which were added as a preservative for the long voyage. The American adaptation is decidedly stronger and offers a more robust hop bite. Back East IPA is no exception. This assertively hopped beer has a great hoppy aroma, crisp hop bite, and smooth medium body.

12 oz. can poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Surprisingly dark amber body. Nice white head. Small collar and a wispy surface.

Smell - Estery and a little yeasty. Sweet doughy malts. A little bit of citrus hop. Doesn't smell like an IPA.

Taste - Quite sweet. Resiny pine hop. Again with the doughy malts. A touch of grain. Fruity estery finish.

Mouthfeel - Too sweet. Medium body. High carbonation.

Overall - This is an IPA? What? This was so boss...like boss hog, lol.

Poured from a 12oz can into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light golden brown color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, earthy hops and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out with an earthy hops bitterness. Then some caramel and citrus sweetness comes in. The malt character is hearty but does not provide much balance. The after-taste is slightly bitter.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry but slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, decent representation of style, it’s not a bad beer but considering how many better alternatives there are within the style, I probably wouldn’t drink this beer again unless my choices were quite limited.

look: 3.25 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

A: Dark orange. Very murky. Loosely packed large off white head. Attractive lacing.

S: A tinny pine character. Weak hop aroma overall, nothing assertive. Weak caramel malt.

M: Wouldn't quite call this creamy as the brewers do. Seems a little thin with moderate carbonation. Doughy malts and a little sticky.

T/O: Dirty, woodsy, earthy and grassy, light orange hop bite. Some medicinal and edelweiss herbal character leads into a moderately high bitterness.Pithy lemon and clean finish that rest for about a minute on the palate. This beer has some nice bones just needs to fill out a bit more. I don't find it as well balanced as others, the brewers say the hops are assertive, which they are. However, hops are fickle, and just because hops are abundant in a beer doesn't make it a great IPA unfortunately.
Pros: Nice price point, local, good bitterness for spicy food
Cons: Body doesn't match flavor, hops don't necessarily dominate in the 'best' way

12 oz. can.

Mostly clear deep orange copper. Fat finger of dense, creamy, light khaki head. Very nice lacing. Nice mix of malt and hops on the nose. Treacle-y caramel and butterscotch malt and spicy, piny hops. Aroma almost seems maltier than hoppier.

Toasted malt and spicy hop bitterness up front. Caramel and gingerbread malt sweetness mid palate. Hints of tropical fruit. Herbal and citrus hop flavors and bitterness into the finish. Orange marmalade and toffee in the finish. Lingering malt sweetness. Moderate body with a slick feel. Not bad.
