Notes/Commercial Description:
Back East’s Imperial Stout is a full-bodied ale brewed with several varieties of dark roasted malt. It has a complex malt character with underlying hints of coffee and chocolate. A generous amount of English hops gives this ale a pronounced hop profile. This robust ale is unfiltered and bottle conditioned.

Thanks to my dad for treating me to this bottle.

The beer poured a near pitch black but slightly thin for the style. A dense and creamy, two-finger tall crown of caramel colored froth topped the liquid. Excellent retention. Patchy curtains of lacing trickled down the glass with every sip.

The nose was really enticing. Rich, smooth dark chocolate notes were immediately apparent. Slightly sweet and fudge-like. Lots of black coffee. Deep, dark and earthy. Slightly boozy. Hints of brown sugar were also noticeable. A somewhat dry, powdery, yeasty quality was also detectible.

Unlike the aroma, the flavor profile seemed harsh and acrid initially. The roasty bitterness of the malts was simply overwhelming. Strong espresso notes were present as well. Hints of bakers chocolate. The finish had a charred and ashy flavor that was very off-putting. Some earthy hop bitterness was also detectible. As the beer warmed, some of the harsher flavors really mellowed out. The roasty dryness gave way to semi-sweet chocolate and freshly brewed coffee notes. Touch of molasses. There was also a dry, slightly chalky, yeasty presence. Considering the ABV, the alcohol was very well hidden.

Like the flavor profile, the mouthfeel improved markedly with time. The liquid started out being rather thin and highly over carbonated. It reminded me somewhat of seltzer water. As the beer sat, the carbonation died down substantially and the liquid turned much more creamy and smooth.

I love supporting new, local breweries, and this offering from Central Connecticut's Back East Brewing is proof that they are off to a good start. This bottle had approximately a year of age on it, which seemed like just enough time to temper the earthy hops and the roasty malts and allow the flavors to meld together.
