Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: LtCracker20 on 09-20-2012

Back East’s Imperial Stout is a full-bodied ale brewed with several varieties of dark roasted malt. It has a complex malt character with underlying hints of coffee and chocolate. A generous amount of English hops gives this ale a pronounced hop profile. This robust ale is unfiltered and bottle conditioned.

Had this on tap when Back East did a tap takeover at Pies and Pints last night. Bartender served it in a pint glass which was a little much for such a big beer, but I can't complain.

A- very rich dark brown almost black color to it. Nice creamy, tan oatmeal-looking head.

S- coffee, dark chocolate, oatmeal, roasted malts.

T- RIch. Delicious coffee notes along with some dark fruits and dark chocolate as well. Light hop bitterness, caramel roasted malts. The 10.5% ABV isn't noticeable at all.

M- Thick, smooth, creamy, very rich.

O- First offering from Back East and I am pretty impressed. Big, tasty stout for sure and I will definitely be buying some in the future.

A: pours black with a finger of brown head that fades into a thin ring with little lacing.

S: roasted malts with a lot of bitter cocoa and smoke. Bitter coffee and char also come through.

T: similar to the aroma, tons of bitter roasted malts with bitter cocoa, char, and coffee.

M: thick body with mid-high carbonation, this beer has surprisingly highly carbonated.

O: a decent stout overall. Nothing special, but enjoyable.

2012 aged on tap. Really deep chocolate taste with a lingering alcohol bite

Shared at at the Tree House bottle share back in December. Reviewed from my notes.

Creamy dark head nice lacing, pitch black beer with nice legs.

Nose chalky powdered cocoa, lactose and milk choc, light dark caramel, hint roast.

Taste creamy dark choc, powdered cocoa, light milk choc and lactose, chewy oats, some earthy hops light spicy hops, chewy and lighter bitterness, etc. A faint metallic acrid burnt roast like thing too. A bit of clean booze warmth. Long bitter earthy hop finish.

Mouth is thicker bodied but not very, decent carb, light booze.

Overall not bad, it gets a little a bit of dark malt acrid like, otherwise a pretty decent RIS, light cocoa and milk chocolate, decent spicy hops, tasty.

sampling a 750 bottle poured at cellar temp into a snifter.
The beer pours a jet black hue with creamy tan head of 3 cm foaming up with a gradual pour.
The aroma is roasted malt, dark chocolate, and coffee bean. I also get some earthy hops mixed in the background. NOt really boozy or heat on the nose.
First sip reveals a fairly thick and chewy body with mild rolling carbonation.
Flavor is roasted malt, black coffee, and dark chocolate. I also get a little burnt molasses and a slightly astringent bitter coffee on the finish. Beer is fairly easy to drink considering the ABV.
This is a sneaky big beer and it catches me off guard a bit at the end of the bottle.
Well made Imp Stout, kind of a roasted malt bomb, but certainly no flaws and very enjoyable.

Worth a pickup when you see these bottles floating around.

A- Pours a deep dark, almost black, body, with reddish hues around the edges. A nice 2-finger khaki head sits atop for a little while. After it falls to a thin, sparse cap, it leaves some decent lace.

S- Milk chocolate up front (plays the biggest part), roasted malts, and a little caramel. Really, it actually reminds me of a milk/sweet stout by the smell.

T- Milk chocolate, a slight roasted coffee-ness, and a little bitter chocolate. None of the ABV comes through at all.

MF- This seems to be the downside of this beer. The flavor gets better as it warms, but the body seems to get thinner. It's doesn't gte water thin, but just enough to notice.

O- Not a bad beer. I had never seen this brewery before, and didn't even know they were from CT till I got home with it. Again, not bad at all, actually pretty good, just happens to be a little thinner than I prefer.
