Lobo Lito has a thick, white head, a mostly clear (but, with noticeable tiny white specs suspended throughout), golden appearance, and a bit of lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of pungent, pale malt, some honey, barn straw, and sweetness. Taste is of sweetness, yeast, some honey, straw, grassy hops, and a touch of bitterness. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Lobo Lito finishes crisp and refreshing. One of the best light beers I’ve yet to try.

Appearance: Pale straw-colored body with a touch of haze. The head is large, snow-white, and rather coarse, but manages to retain well. The lacing leaves scattered clumps on the glass walls; carbonation is quite sparse, with only a few fat bubbles drifting lazily to the surface.

Aroma: The aroma consists of lightly toasted pale malt, and some lemon and grassy hops.

Taste: Opens with what seems, for the style, an abundance of pale malt. As with the aroma, there is a notable lightly toasted quality. Mild citric and grassy hops are present as well; these are pleasantly balanced against the malt. As the taste draws to a close, there is a burst of lemon hop flavor, which brings the taste to a graceful close.

Mouth feel: Smooth and soft, with zesty carbonation, fairly full for the style.

Drinkability/notes: A very well-made example of the style.

Presentation: Packaged in a twelve-ounce brown glass long neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

A strong pour of Lobo Lito yields a lemon-peel yellow, slightly hazy body capped by a fizzy white-white head not long for this world. Carbonation is wild in the glass: small chains of small bubbles steadily rise to the surface as larger bubbles randomly burst upward from the bottom and race towards the top. Interesting.

The nose is inviting. I immediately appreciate sweet lemon and freshly ground coriander seed. What's that? No adjunct aromas? Am I hallucinating? No. Pedernales' website indicates that there are no adjuncts used in this light American lager. Extra points.

This is what light lagers can (and should) taste like. Sweet lemon and coriander seed up front; bitter lemon zest on the tail end. Despite the beer's slightly lower ABV, the delicate malts allow alcoholic flavors to mingle with the fruity, spicy, and herbal hops. There's something about this beer's flavor that reminds me of a semi-sweet lemon martini thinned out with tonic water.

I'm ambivalent about the mouthfeel. The beer felt watery and over-carbonated at first. As it warmed and settled, things got better. Hmm.

I've often said, and at some point probably written, that the Light Lager is one of the unexplored frontiers of the craft brew universe. Here's to Pedernales for coming up with a superior example of how flavorful and refreshing these beers can be. I'll be picking up a 6-pack next time. Cheers!
