12 oz bottle pours a dark brown color with a creamy cap of tan head. Decent retention and some nice connecting sheets of lace.

Nose is nutty and chocolaty, a bit like Nutella actually. Fairly sweet and lacks roast or coffee, pretty nice smelling brew here.

Nice flavor profile too...sweetness is tangible but not overboard and the chocolate flavors are really nice. There is still a bit of nutty, caramel character too. The mouthfeel is a treat; rich and creamy for a lager and the carbonation is really fine-bubbled. Fits the style profile fairly well, but also has a bit of a milk stout aspect to it as well. After a bad introduction to Pedernales (the IPA), the Texas Lager and Negro Lobo have impressed me enough to pick up a sixer next time I see it around.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass.
Review from notes: January 31st, 2014.

A: Dark brown, off-white head.

S: Toasted malt and chocolate.

T: Chocolate and creamy.

M: Good amount of carbonation. Smooth.

O: This is a good one. I've had Pedernales at a local tasting and remembered this one. Now that I've had a full bottle, I can recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good Dunkel.

Expecting something like Amberbock, Ziegenbock, or Lone Star Bock, I was pleasantly surprised: (not that those above are necessarily bad, but) this is a substantial beer. It feels concentrated and dense and very much brings chocolate to mind . . . (yes, even before reading that descriptor used by the company.) Absent is cloying sweetness or any medicinal quality.

A German-style beer with a Spanish name seems pretty appropriate for Texas, doesn't it.

This is a beefy brew that commands attention . . . in a good way. I look forward to drinking more of it, trying some food-pairings, and maybe braising a dark-breasted game bird in Lobo Negro.
