I can honestly say this is a new beer style for me a black saison, and while I love a cda, this left me dumbfounded. Pfriem makes excellent beers and no doubt this was well made with the saison yeast and a rich very roasted malt profile. My qualms are that the fruity spiciness from the saison doesn't blend as well with the burnt coffee notes. Worth trying.

I wasn't planning on stopping by, but while walking along the HR waterfront, I noticed Pfriem just there, and on my way back, I had to stop in to check them out. 7.0% ABV, 34 IBUs

Mildly hazy dark brown with dense, light brown head, nice lacing. Nose is nice roast, nice fruit and moderate noble hop char. Yeast char is muted. Roast amplifies grainy acidity and a chalky mineral character. Fruit is pear and a touch of grape. Palate opens with a crisp and grainy bitterness and acidity. Chalk makes this a little astringent. Roast, a touch of smoke, some phenols. Mildly acrid, the palate is quite disjointed. Moderate citrus hop char that clashes with roast flavors and yeast.

Served in tulip. OK, a Black Saison? How are you supposed to rate to style when the brewer purposely makes the beer not the color of the style? First beer world problem, for sure. Poured a solid black color with 3/4 inch of tan head that had good retention and lace.

The aroma was the typical yeast, spice and grain that is expected. I didn't pick up any scent from (what I assume are) the roast malts/grains used to get the color. I was expecting roast, coffee, maybe even a bit of chocolate. Again, a bit confusing. On the tongue, the basic flavors of the style were very soft and muted, the yeasty spice being predominant, and a faint hint of did show through. There was a bit of a tangy funk at the back of the tongue, and I hope it was intentional, but I didn't think it went well with the rest of the flavor profile.

The body was the smooth medium of the style, and went down easily. Drinkability will depend on how you like that funk on the finish, I would have the beer again, but probably not 2 in a row. Overall, a decent beer that's worth a shot if you see it.
