not a bad beer but nothing amazing. heavy sugar or syrup taste. i would not seek out this beer. it was expensive and not worth the extra money. again, not a bad beer, but there is better for cheap out there. purchased at american beverage on court st in brooklyn.

Significantly tart beer with yeast and I think Brett and Elderberry,orange peel, mild other spices and cocoa. Wierd but drinkable Belgium. Low carbonation. A bit of sediment. Not something I would seek out again,and not as good as the other beers I have tried from this brewery, but thanks Phy21ca.The tartness still there in aftertaste.

Pours a light brown color with a rather small off-white head that dissipated very quickly into a ring around the glass. The smell is odd for a BSPA, tart and sour. Similar to a Berliner Weisse. The taste is sour right off the bat, followed by what I can see as a light cocoa powder presence. No nobel hops were detected, not even close. The feel is light and quite fizzy and finishes on the sour side. Not sure what to think about this brew. I think my rating would change if this really wasn't a BSPA. IMO this is a Berliner Weisse with cocoa powder added to offset the sourness. As a BSPA this is pretty terrible; as a Berliner Weisse this is rather unique. You decide....

A: Poured a burnt orange with a lively micro-bubbly light beige head that was moderately lasting. There were some yeasty speckles lining the bottom of the glass as well a slight haze and a huge feverous carbonation that made the head dance up and down.

S: The nose was light with a touch of yeastiness and hints of fresh oranges, sweet honey malt, and spruce.

T: The flavor was yeasty, with some sour oranges, citrus and a fruity/spicy hopping (lemony). There was some fresh fruit (apples, melons) with a slight acidity, along with a soothing sour citrus and spicy alcohol presence in the finish. Did not detect the cocoa powder which was advertised on the label.

M: The mouthful was light, oily, and softly carbonated with a moderate sour fade on the tongue.

D: Very nice drinkability, pleasant soothing citrus sourness and spritzy fruity palate makes for an enjoyable experience.

another one I had picked up at gbx and decided to open up tonight. poured into a fluted glass.

the pour was a touch dull with just a clear medium amber coming through and that was about it, no head to speak of. aroma is odd. lots of wood, muted grains, no cocoa, so no clue where that fits in, grape skins, various dark fruits. warming brings a hint of caramel and light hops, but again nothing crazy at all. clean finish, a touch slick with the oak coming through strongest about 15 secinds after the swallow.

not enough to distract me from the rest of the lineup, but this one fails.

I am almost positive this is my first beer from Switzerland all though I was not blown away I did enjoy it. No foam or lacing and a swamp mud color.

Smells of apples, spices, wood and light acidic sourness. I couldn't really get any cocoa of the nose or the palate but I did notice it once and awhile (I think).

Tastes of sour fruits, spice and that's about all I could get.

Poured an apple cider brown into the glass with no head or lacing around the glass. Unappealing, to be honest. Aromatic notes of sour fruits and citrus.

Sour fruits dominate the flavor, with slight notes of Belgian yeast and alcohol. Couldn't really detect the cocoa. I have to admit, any time I question if the bottle is skunked, that is not a good sign. Mouthfeel is thin and a bit watery. Didn't really want more than one of these.

I was hoping for something unique and exciting with this brew. Well, it was unique, but for the wrong reasons. Would not recommend.

Pours clouded amber with a large head that slowly descends. Oddly though, at the end of the bottle, the color is a mirky light brown.

The smell is of vinegar and tart fruitiness. Not catching the supposed cocoa that is added. Also not catching any hint of Challenger hop that is also claimed on the label to be there. Smells something of a fruity, lightly spiced wine that has just passed its prime.

The taste is of a berry-like fruitiness with vinegar and a vague spiciness. If there is any hint of the cocoa, it is WAY in the back, and I'm wondering if that is only because I'm expecting it. The tart/sour lacks any true hop balance, to boot.

The feel is rather spritzy and light with a touch of astringency.

This brewery does "interesting" things, but this is the third offering I've had from them, and I've yet to be impressed. Spiciness seems odd and overpowering on all. The vinegar quality of this one was just a bit too much to be pleasing on the palate.

A- Pours a hazy red color, thin cap of head, no lacing.

S- Funky apple cider, spicy mustard, almost brettanomyces funkiness and apple vinegar. Definitely no cocoa.

T- Starts off with a touch of acidity then notes of apple vinegar sourness, tart apple skin finish. Again, no cocoa to speak of.

M- Low carb. Sour and tart.

D- Definitely off per style, which I'll dock for here. Absolutely no cocoa anywhere in this bottle. It was a decent sour ale though.

This beer pours a hazy pale amber color. There is no head, and no lacing. The aroma is of sour apples, dry cider, barnyard funk, and some tartness. The taste is the same as the aroma, but with a vinegar taste through out. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lively carbonation. Overall, this is a decent beer, but where is the cocoa the bottle talks about being there?

Pours like most BFMs: copper with mild carbonation and trace amounts of head. Smells pretty sour with tart fruit and funky yeast front and center. A touch earthy towards the end. The tartness here is distinctively BFM.

Taste starts off mildly sour but quickly turns bland and watery. Some hidden fruits show up here and there before finishing slightly bitter and chocolatey. Bitterness is from the semisweet baker's chocolate, not hops.

Weak body is typical of BFMs but not of the style. The watered-down taste and thin body lend themselves to good drinkability, so there's that. Unimpressive overall, especially considering the other excellent brews BFM produces.

Muddy, reddish color. Decent level of CO2 going on. Aroma is somewhat lactic and sour. A glimpse of fruit to be had. Flavor is fairly tart and dry. No sense of any cocoa powder as the labels states. Somewhat of a funky sourness. Not unpleasant but just sort of "there". Ok mouthfeel-thin though lively with the high carbonation level. Rather average in all aspects. Not sure what type of beer this is trying to be but it just says "beer" to me.

Pours a cloudy amber color with a large head. Aroma is quite sour, difficult to describe otherwise. Taste is overwhelmingly sour... vinegary, i guess. Not much else. The label reads: "amber ale brewed with cocoa powder" but i personally can't detect even the slightest trace of cocoa. Certainly an interesting taste, but not to my liking.

Notes: i tried to review this beer subjectively. Personally, i hated it but i'm sure someone who enjoys an especially tart, unusual beer would absolutely love this.

A: the head is a little too light for me, portending a beer that might be under carbonated as some have suggested the hazy dark amber/ brown color of the beer however is appealing to me in that it looks kind of raw and not overly filtered and processed

S: there is an attempt at a robust bouquet here, but i just don't smell it. from the bottle you get a rush of yeasty fruits, but once poured into a glass it dissipates and it somewhat overshadowed by mild phenols

T: there is more fruit in the taste and its not tart but more sweet cut by dryness created by a yeast finish, not from any sort of hops. much more like a mild barley wine or something rather than a bpa the mouth feel is a bit too watery and you dont notice the cocoa at all.

M: a bit too watery and no notice of 7.5% abv, might as well be 4% this isn't a problem but doesn't fit the "strong pale ale" moniker.

D: i don't want to dash this beer too much, its a solid raw beer, i just don't think upon close inspection it fits its style, or the goals listed on the bottle. it tastes like a middling home brew in that its raw seemingly unfiltered unprocessed. this is not a bad beer at all, just not a great one

I picked this up at State Line Liquors in
Elkton MD about a month ago - cellared. Decanted after a quick chill from the 11.2 oz swing top brown bottle into a BFM goblet.

A - A dark amber similar to peach nectar, but w/ copper tinges. There were floaters that settled to the bottom of the glass which is good for a bottle conditioned beer -just yeast sediment. The head is light tan and about 2 fingers high w/ a tight bead. The bubbles just keep on coming as the head erodes

S - Slightly sour/slight funk mix w/ a nice tannic and acidic odor. The fruity juicy and subtle spice aromas are pleasant and mild

M - A tart feel that is slightly sour + slightly malty w/ a hint of spice or is that cocoa? There is a nice smooth texture as it finishes. The ale is highly carbonated (sours can be) w/ medium body and slight warmth of alcohol

T - A crisp malty flavor w/ a nice acidic sourness like tart grapes w/ a hint of cocoa in the flavor after the initial tartness, but not much. I would probably not notice except that it is on the label. This does have a slight green apple tartness. The brettanomyces here is a nice touch adding some depth to the malt character and at most the cocoa might add a little contrast, but not much flavor.

D - I really thought this was tasty, but as far as drinkability I would say it is just above average. I like the taste and it has some strength, it is definitely not boring by any means

A - Medium amber ice tea. Zero head to speak of.

S - Super light. Touch of booze. Slightly tangy character.

T - Cider. Unripe peaches. Tangy tartness. Dry dustyness on the back end.

M - Watery with a dry finish.

D - Poor flavor and mouthfeel. I wouldn't recommend a bottle this old.

Serving type: bottle.

Pours a dark amber/ orange color with thick yellowish head and big chunks of yeast floating around. Very fruity citrus aroma with hints of chocolate and alcohol. Surprisingly tart/ sour citrus fruit taste consisting of lemon and orange peel. Slightly bitter finish.

A dark, amber-brown color shows a lightly hazy plum color when held up to the light. The head is thin, wispy and has a tan color to it. Softly tart smelling and there is a light clove note as well as aromas of tart plum, floral plum, something that is potpourri like, a hint of orange somehow as well as some toasted, biscuit-like malt character that becomes noticeable after a bit. Somehow this smells a bit soap like (a potpourri flavored soap).

The beer tastes sweet with ample clove flavors and has a nice tart finish. It is quite fruity tasting with lots of plum like notes as well as some caramelized apple flavors. The finish is quite spicy tasting , both from carbonic acid as well as the fermentation character and higher alcohol notes. Hmm, there is a lot of spiciness to this beer really, again I am drawn to that potpourri comparison, but there is also some floral notes, a light herbal component as well as some touches of lavender and pepper. As the beer warms up the malt character becomes more noticeable; flavors of whole grain, toasted though not burnt bread, brown sugar and biscuit notes.

This is an interesting beer, it is quite complex and even a bit confusing for a traditional Weizenbock as there is lots of spiciness in this beer, but in the end it is quite tasty.

Topped by a frothy, initially three-finger thick, lightly brown tinged, but mostly tan colored head. The beer is a hazy, ruddy, darkish amber color, but shows a hazy, reddish hued, amber color when held up to the light. The aroma is quit fruity smelling; notes of tart plum, berries and ripe apples are each distinctly noticeable. There is an interesting spice note here that is soft, but noticeable with a touch of ginger and some notes of lemon pepper. The end of the aroma has a toasty malt character and a certain musty, overripe fruit, woody, nuttiness.

Tart, quite dry and somehow light bodied despite a creamy mouthfeel. The beer is fairly well carbonated, but the viscousness of the beer seems to mitigate the ample carbonation quite well. The finish is lightly bittered from hops, but also has a dusty, light cocoa note to it and a bit of toasty grain character. Really though this beer is quite tart, this really accentuates a fruit character that reminds me of sour, ripe plums, a touch of tamarind and a touch of sour melon. Somehow, even though this is quite dry, this has a rich, caramelized, chewy middle to it, or at least something is contributing a similar richness.

This is quite an interesting beer, the cocoa is definitely quite subtle (if noticeable at all), but I really like the sourness that has taken hold in this beer. The sourness makes this quite light and drinkable, though it still has that certain viscous fullness to it. This is perhaps a touch one dimensional because of the dominant tartness, but the sourness is not overwhelming and I really like what it adds here.
