I purchased this not all that long ago at Hunger-n-Thirst while Mughugger was working in the bottle shop. I really had no immediate plans to drink it, but this afternoon has become "Russia at Chez Wody" and I am not only not apologizing for it, but I am advancing in the face of the enemy!

From the bottle: "Batch 2013"; "Jurassian Imperial Stout brewed with Black Pepper, Vanilla & Tea"; "Extremely Complex"; "This Cuvee was created in the honor of the Jurassian revolutionist Alex Le Rouge. Enjoy this wonderful Cuvee at about 10-12 Celcius (50-53 F), with a crunch of bitter chocolate or a Cigar. Cuvee Alex Le Rouge can be sequestrated for a few years in a cellar."

No cigars for this asthmatic and since I don't really dig chocolate, I am flying solo on this mission. Man, the bottle top with its rubber gasket really popped open with aloud "Pop!" I sat back, awaiting a gusher or some other sort of malfeasance, yet nothing. Hmmm. Looking into the open neck felt like staring into the barrel of a loaded revolver. I was nervous, but unwavering. I gave it a gentle pour and still came up with a finger of deep-tan head with limited retention. Nose smelled more like a Saison than an RIS! The black pepper was huge as was an earthy mustiness, perhaps from the the tea, perhaps from the yeast, maybe from both. Color was a cola-brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) and garnet highlights. This is a Russian?!? I laugh in the face of Yuri Dimitrov if that is the case! Russian Tea Room? Ha! Mouthfeel was medium and danced across my tongue, unlike today's predecessors, who marched along in their hobnailed boots, unwavering in their single mindedness. This was like drinking strong black tea with gunpowder, which I have done, but it does not strike fear into my heart. Warming, I was getting a fusel alcohol burn, and a light chocolatiness, but where was the Oooomph!?! No wonder that they wanted me to have dark chocolate and/or a cigar - it/they might have hidden the fact that this Czar wore no clothes. Finish was that of an RIS on "Mute". If I were to sequester one, it would be under Abu Grahib conditions, away from prying eyes where I could torture it endlessly until it became something worthy of my time. (2,213 characters)

Poured at the wonderful Duckworth's - Park Rd - Charlotte, NC... all drafts $3.50 today!

It pours very dark brown with little to no head or lacing. The nose is toasty - pleasant to look at and smell, but the taste is a letdown - especially after the amazing brews I recently tried by them in VA @ Mekong. It's thinner than an imperial stout should be - very much a flat cola thing going on. It won't sour me on this brewery. (425 characters)

A - Pours light brown w/ a golden reddish hue. Almost like root beer. Little head which dissipates quickly, and no lacing.
S - My favorite part of this beer. Lots of sour cherry and oak aroma. There's some earth and farmhouse funk in there as well. Maybe a hint of vanilla, but no black pepper or tea aroma.
T - Sweet dark fruits up front transform to an acidic tart cherry finish. Faint hop bitterness present in the aftertaste. Can't say I taste any vanilla, black pepper, or tea.
M - Not much carbonation or body in this one. It was a 2009 bottle. I'm not sure if that had an effect on the mouthfeel.
O - This beer was not what I expected, and I feel like it's mislabeled as an Imperial Stout. However, I really like the beer itself. It reminded me a lot of a flanders red. Kinda a beginners sour beer. Enjoyed trying this beer, but I would not pay the steep price for another bottle. (891 characters)

very different take here, imperial stout with vanilla, tea, and pepper. have not had too much swiss beer either, so i was pumped for this. the pour is much lighter than the style norm, almost glowing red instead of black. it has a settling half inch of tan head and some really coagulated yeast bits the look rather nasty at the bottom of my wine glass. the nose smells like berries, tart ones, like cranberries, or wild yeast, definitely dont get the big bitter roasted barley here. i get vanilla in the flavor, but the contributions of the tea and pepper are less noticeable. some chocolate from the malt provides the base and a wild ale yeast cleans up a thick tart fruity finish. definitely an odd interpretation of the style, but its mostly successful, with the alcohol being well hidden and the fruit and yeast flavors being more central than they usually are in a big stout. the yeast pieces in the dregs are a little gross, but thats irrelevant in this really dynamic and delicious brew. rich and yummy, i need to try more from these guys, but man do they get expensive. (1,078 characters)

A: Pitch black.

S: Light and grainy.

T: Lots of malt with a bit of a black coffee feel. Watery, eh.

M: Coarse.

O: Not one with big stout flavors. It has a weird body for a stout and doesn't deliver on a full body. Too thin and coarse of a liquid. (278 characters)

The beer pours in an almost black color with no head.

The aroma is a bit boring of some leather, some roasty notes, and a strange off chocolate. A bit of spice. Not much sweetness in there.

The flavor follows again with a lack of roasted malt, some coffee and chocolate. There's certainly some muted vanilla with a tea dryness on the end.

The body is super watery for this big of a beer and it lacked any carbonation.

A really disappointing beer and really pushes how an imperial stout can be done so very wrong. (516 characters)

Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Sure, this bottle made my jaunt to Chevy Chase a bit more expensive than I anticipated, but it just sounded so good... Anyway, this stuff pours a deep onyx topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises blackstrap molasses, roasted malts, light acrid coffee, mild anise, faint hints of various dark fruits, and a light wisp of smoke billowing around every now and again. The taste brings in more of the same, with a bit more of a fruity component (not enough to make things all that strange, though) and a new vein of what seems like tea. The body is a hefty medium, with a rather light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall, a very nice stout, one that makes me wanna seek out more from this brewery, despite the seemingly higher pricetags. (790 characters)

Poured as part of the "We Want the Funk" flight at Trappist Provisions from a 22oz bottle into a 6oz wine glass. Consumed "05/08/13." Review is from my notes.

Pours a blackened, nearly opaque color with a greyish head that immediately gives this the appearance of cold mocha brew. There's a surprising amount of bubbles that glide to the top and that remind me that this is indeed a beer, in spite of the viscous, nearly fortified wine looking appearance. Alcohol legs are huge on this one. In a way, almost looks like a puréed plum drink, if it were not for the alcohol and carbonation. Just like other beers from BFM, looks great.

The aroma is chock filled with many flavors that gives this an odd yet surprisingly fascinating profile overall. There's an immediate tinge of plums and raisins that is followed by a soured, woody, vinous profile, and then immediately melds into roasted cocoa, vanilla, light floral notes, tea, and dried leaves. The soured flavor lingers on, and with the wood resembles tobacco or a slightly leathery flavor. Very earthy overall, yet filled with a combo of ripe and faded tannins from the malts, wood, and delicate yet highly mineral-like hop profile. Very refreshing, not too explosive, and integrated to the point of holding interest in the long run.

The flavor is immediately soured plums combined with an earthy, slightly smoky flavor imparted from the wood. Then, these flavors become slightly more tarty and meld with leather, cherries, Port wine-like fortified flavors, and a crisp yet juicy dark malty bready finish. Alcohol is well hidden, but the sweetness is undeniably there. The soured juiciness of the fruits, as well as the light chocolate, black tea, and leafy flavors are all very well integrated, and allow each other space in the long run. Carbonation is good, as indicated from the very beginning. The finish is very long lasting, and while tarty, it does not induce salivation by any means. Not a chore to drink at all - very complex but well assembled.

BFM really shows here how a barrel aged soured stout should be made. Dark fruit forward, slightly roasted, tart and crisp, filled with tannins that slowly open up in a long aftertaste, and ultimately, balance that makes this drinkable for pretty much any occasion. I think this beer deserves more love than it's been getting here. This is not a style that is common by any means, but it's one that I'm starting to enjoy more as they turn out this way. (2,465 characters)

Weird beer. The bottle says it's a 2009 batch. This means the beer could possibly be four years old at this point. I don't have much experience with aging beers so I can't really comment how this really effects the beer. It mostly makes me second guess everything.

Overall I liked it. Smell is pretty sour (vinegar-ish). And the sourness comes over in taste as well, but it's clearly not a intended to be marketed like a sour. I attribute it to the tea adjuncts. Malts are strong in the after taste. The alcohol is noticeable but tasteful.

Carbonation is off. It poured odd, like water. Mouthfeel is where it's lacking. Too sticky.

Not going to buy this again, but I liked trying it. I'm a sucker for pop-top bottles.

A - Dark brown-black with a thin finger of frothy off-white head. Fades quickly.

S - Chocolate and dark caramel malts, cherries and other dark fruits, coffee, vanilla, black pepper, tea, black licorice, and some booze.

T - Chocolate and dark caramel malts, cherries and other dark fruits, coffee, vanilla, tea, a bit of sourness, black licorice, molasses, and some booze.

M - Medium-minus bodied, mild carbonation. Smooth with a sweet, warming finish.

11.2oz pop top bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a near pitch black color. Some good tan bubbles formed.

(S)- A very sharp whiff of a vinegar-like tobacco that quickly flows into some rich raisin, vanilla, and cocoa combo. Even hints at a black tea component which I quite like. A subtle smokiness at the end. Ever so slightly odd, but complex and inviting.

(T)- A unique beer here. Bits of bitter black tea, raisin, molasses, leather, and a subtle tart; almost acidic kick at the end. Very similar to the smell really.

(M)- A mellow carbonation level. A really different balance to it that is definitely not the norm for the style with its subtle sharp twang and almost earthy qualities, but at the same time its not necessarily as sweet as expected either. Very unique.

(O)- Definitely kind of an odd ball of a beer for the style, but somehow it just works for me as slightly weird as it is. Its not sour in the sense of the word, but there are hints behind some of its dry, earthy qualities. Had lots of enjoyment out of this nonetheless. (1,053 characters)

2009 11.2 oz bottle poured into a Duvel Tulip style glass. During the pour, the liquid comes out root beer brown (minus the carbonation). Once everything settles it looks dark brown, almost black, when it's sitting at the bottom of the glass. Small tan colored cap that dissipates quite a bit, but leaves a ring around the glass for the whole session.

Very interesting in the nose on this one. Big but not huge malt backbone here. Classic stout tones, more chocolate than coffee. Hints of vanilla and what seems like bourbon, but I don't think this was barrel aged, so maybe it's just the vanilla. Call me crazy but I think I can smell the tea it says its brewed with. Earthy pepper tone and some slight tartness, like a dry red wine.

Taste is a slight step above the smell. Plenty of roasted malt and more sweet than bitter chocolate. Some alcohol.bourbon notes, vanilla and leads into a black tea flavor. There are also some tones of some dark fruits as well. Dark and complex, not the Belgian yeast flavors I was expecting, which was nice.

Mouthfeel is good, lighter than I anticipated. Good carbonation level, well balanced and pretty smooth. The age held up very nicely. Good beer, glad I finally cracked it open. Thanks John for the recommendation. (1,259 characters)

Huge POP from the swingtop cap as bubbles spew forth from this gusher. Dark brown body, TONS of off-white head.

Smells like an Oude Bruin, wtf? Intense, soured brown ale yeast. Weird, not good.

Taste is along the same lines: mild sourness, minimally roasted, spices galore. So strange, not particularly good. I'd never guess this was a stout base, and I wouldn't buy this myself. (408 characters)

Pours a one finger off-white head that vanishes leaving no lace. Deep mahogany almost black color, ton of yeast left in bottle. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Oak & molasses nose and flavor is smokey oak and burnt molasses, tart finish. Not the usual imp stout. This is an excellent beer that while it certainly has some qualities of an imperial stout, is entirely it's own thing.

What I really appreciate about it is the fact that you can clearly taste the adjuncts (tea, peppers) melded together with a clean sourness.

A very strange beer but well balanced and the drink ability is unreal. The 10 ish abv is not apparent at all. The bottle I had was from a recent bactch...

You can't and won't appreciate this if you go into it exclusively looking for the rich dark chocolate, roasty, coffee notes that you find in the typical Impy Stout category; but there in there in addition to the unique sourness. (647 characters)

Just to be clear, I am not reviewing this as an Imperial Stout because, regardless of what it says on the label, this is a strong dark sour ale, which I think is really cool.

Dark brown and not particularly opaque, decent carbonation at first, but no real head and it was spent relatively quickly, especially as this is meant to be savored.

Smell threw me for a loop - tart cider, musty blackberry. Very interested. Sips are indeed complex: noticeably of the pear that i was surprised to find on the label later - now i want to make a dark sour with pears in the secondary! Thin molasses flavor, the tea comes in and out, not sure if that's a light grassy hop or the vanilla.

Dry, remarkably drinkable for 10+. Interesting and different beer worth trying. But definitely not an imperial stout. (796 characters)

Pours a bright mahogany color but settles much darker, with a modest tan head. Aroma has quite a lot of raisins, with some tart red fruit and a load of dark grains. The vanilla also comes through, albeit mildly, almost like a Sees candy when coupled with the more chocolatey notes. Flavor recalls export stout more than imperial stout, with a dark bready malt profile and only a secondary roastiness. The pepper is obvious both up front and in the finish, but it remains a light accent. Surprisingly tart and fruity mid-palate with grapes, raisins and even a little citrus. The tea comes through not in flavor but in mouthfeel; it adds a vanishing dryness bordering on astringency. The vanilla is again mild --if you take a quick gulp you might get a bit of round sweetness but if you’re swishing it around looking for nuances, the other flavors overpower it. Medium body, appropriate for the flavor, with little-to-no alcohol present. Bottom line: This imperial stout is rather atypical, which makes it endearing and challenging to a palate that’s accustomed to coffee/chocolate bombs. The label calls it "Extremely Complex" and I agree. Definitely give this one a shot. (1,175 characters)

A – Dark, semi-black body with cola highlights. Fine-bubbled head is thick and creamy with nice retention and good lace.

S – Cranberry, white grape, and a huge note of granny smith apples. Slightly sour twang. Brown sugar and booze as it warms.

T – The opening is bright and acidic, but strangely salty. The center minerally and malty with a mellow fruitiness of tart pear, plum and cranberry. A tart, peppery, lingering finish is dry and loaded with tannin.

M – Over carbonated for the style. Medium body.

O – An interesting brew, but the sourness just didn't work well in this particular flavor profile. (619 characters)

A - Pours mocha brown, still can see through it, not much head. Not much lace.

S - Faint bitter cocoa, some sweet malt. Not much in general.

T - Thin, a bit astringent. Medicinal at end. Not going very well so far.

M - Light body, low carb, not very good balance.

D - At 10 bucks for a 12 oz beer, this on kinda is on the sucky side. (337 characters)

Beer bottle (33 cl., batch 2010), purchased from Clem (Nantes) and tasted in 2011. (Review #1100).

Appearance : dark red color, with tan foamy head.
Smell : roasted malt, spicy and peppery aromas.
Taste and mouthfeel : roasted malt flavours, caramel and chocolate, with vinous note in finish (rather acidic).
Drinkability : a very good beer in the style Imperial Stout . Drink at cellar temperature :-). Made with cane sugar, sarawak peper, russian tea and Bourbon vanilla (La Réunion).

Note from Clément : it's possible to find differences in taste according to the vinous brews or chocolate. (597 characters)

This is an 11.2 oz swing top bottle. Batch 2009. It was $8.49 from Beer Run.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, lake water brown color with almost no head. Maybe one or two spots of lacing. Pretty pitiful appearance for an imperial stout.

Smell: Very strange. Its primarily a sweet, slightly chocolatey smell and lots of spicy tea. Swirling seems to bring out the black pepper a bit. There's a little bourbon, and also a little leather and tobacco. Very little roast. It gets points for trying, not really for succeeding.

Taste: Just weird. Lots of flavors, but weird. Almost completely devoid of any roasted malt flavors. Slight chocolate and coffee. The black pepper is quite pronounced. Tea flavor is also pretty pronounced. The label says "extremely complex." That doesn't necessarily mean good.

Mouthfeel: Its just thin and dull. Undercarbonated too.

Overall: Not bad or off putting, but a cluttered mess that in almost no way resembles an imperial stout. Can't taste the 10% abv though. (992 characters)

2009 vintage.

My first beer from Switzerland.

Pours a murky dark brown with a 1 inch light tan head that settles to a film on the top of the beer. Light penetrates at the bottom of the glass but not on the top near the head. Wavy lines of lacing stick to the glass on the drink down. Visible chunks of sediment are visible in the beer. Smell is of dark fruits, spiced chai tea, and some sour/funky aromas. Taste is of sour dark fruits, dark roasted malt, and some vanilla/tea flavors on the finish. These tea flavors create a mild bitterness on the palate after each sip. A pretty good carbonation level with small, crisp bubbles on the tongue and in the throat. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is somewhat different than other imperial stouts I have had before. (774 characters)

Wanted to give this one a shot, The description on the label sounded like it would be pretty impressive. I poured the bottle out and it was a nice deep brown color with a decent looking head on it. The lacing was light and didn't really stick too well. The had some roasted malt aromas mixed with a nice dose of herbal aromas too. The taste of the beer wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be. I found it to be a little off balance and just kind of confusing. The mouthfeel had a decent thickness to it with a light carbonation. Overall I was a little bummed by this beer. I was expecting a lot more and nothing really came out of this one for me. It's drinkable but not really memorable. (691 characters)

Brown glass swingtop bottle poured into Weihenstephan weissbier glass in Antwerp, Belgium. Reviewed live. Bottle label identifies the ABV as 10.276%, not 2.8% (give them a break; they're swiss).

A: Beautiful tan colour creamy thick head of seven fingers (keep in mind this is a weissiber glass) and brilliant retention. Solid black colour.

Sm: Sour lambic-esque esters. That's it. Not what I expected for the style, but it's more interesting than problematic. A moderate strength scent.

T: Sour ester hops alongside slight nut hops and a full barley body. Fairly complex but a bit off. Poorly balanced and built for the style. I detect absolutely no black pepper whatsoever. Vanilla may be present, but if so it's buried.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Complementary of the flavours of the body.

Dr: Not what's expected for the style, and not a good beer. Worth a go for lambic fans maybe, but don't expect it to be the type of imperial stout an imperial stout fan would enjoy. Overpriced as well. In fairness, it does cover its high ABV well. (1,042 characters)

Poured into a snifter, this brew appears a dark brown color, cloudy in appearance when held to the light. A tan cap forms and fades fairly quickly to a thin layering across the top. Some spotty lace sticks to the glass when swirled which also revives the head just slightly.

The smell of this brew is pungent with a scent of tea. There is fruity alcohol esters present along with the spice of black pepper and lemon. Very tangy brew with a completely unique nose. As it warms, more fruity scents evolve like apple with some lactic character.

The taste is mildly peppery with a tangy inclusion of alcohol coupled with a flavor of tea. Quite an unusual experience of flavors that is interesting. It is lightly lactic across the back with tangy fruity flavors. The peppery quality mixed with the seemingly tartness of this brew makes the finish crisp and unusual for a imperial stout.

This is a medium bodied brew with modest to light level of carbonation. Quite an unusual and interesting mix of ingredients and flavors here. Quite tangy for the style with a light wild aspect to it. It is worth a try but not something I could see mused drinking more than a glass of. (1,200 characters)
