the 11.4oz swing top made a noticable hiss as it swung open so i know it wasn't completely flat. despite that, there are no signs of life to this beer as it pours out into the cup. body is a dark murky brown with some reddish hues around the top edges.

the nose is very sweet and jelly like, reminds me of jello shots when they're in liquid stage. the taste is horrid, this could be the worst beer i've ever had. overly sweet with a flat stale juice flavor to it. there is a noticable alcohol presence to it, but it doesnt have any hints of rum or oak to it, jkust over the top sweetness.

mouthfeel is completely flat and sticky. like i mentioned earlier, there is some alcohol burn to it. overall this is just nasty. i'm at a loss of words for how truly horrid this beer is.

This was so very unique. A sour rye barley wine. I love sours and bw, can't wait. It poured a murky deep reddish brown in typical barleywine style, but more appropriate to a sour, no carbonation. Like none. Smells tart but there are definite notes of raisin and molasses. The impact on my tastebuds was similar to biting into a lemon, soo very tart. Really can't find much vinegar. The molasses and raisin come through in the end, hard to prevail over such sourness, but it adds a unique mouthfeel that doesn't really require carbonation. So interesting. Not the most incredible flavors or colors, but what a beer.

Appearance: really dark brown and opaque, like prune juice. No foam or any lacings.

Smell: Very funky. Also picked up a bit of raisins and prunes. Not getting much of oak or aromas associated with barrel aging.

Taste: Clearly does not taste like a barely wine. Has a intense vinegary tartness. Unfortunately I do not know if this is intentional or it's full blown infected. I do not taste any rum or oak from the barrels. It does have a nice bitter finish that goes melds well with the tartness but once again, I do not know what the intentional flavors of this beer is.

Mouthfeel: no carbonation in this beer. There is some body but really nothing spectacular. No warmth from the alcohol either, kind of weird considering it's 10% ABV.

Overall: I'm trying to like it but once again not sure if this is infected or not. It's sour and I did not expect this. It did not indicate anywhere on the bottle that this would present some serious funk.I also have to add that if I knew this was going to be sour, I might have enjoyed this a lot more (then I wouldn't be debating if the current flavors are intentional or not).

A: Pours a dark reddish brown with a very small amount of head, and what is there dissipates to nothing, leaving no lacing.

S: Sweet and sour malt, with notes of sour cherry and honey.

T: Sour, but balanced by the significant sweetness. The slightly boozy syrupy note coats the inside of the mouth, with a sour note digging out the center.

M: Full body, very low carbonation.

Overall, interesting, but I'm not sure I'd really recommend it, and I wouldn't seek it out again. It's certainly still worth a try if you are interested in something unique.

Sour Barleywine. You just don't see that everyday. But as the "imperialized" status of Terrapin meets the "wild and funky" flare of BFM, something crazy is about to go down!

While the beer pours nothing like expected, its non-carbonated stillness allows the ale to settle into the snifter with an appearance that looks like a mix of dark red wine and prune juice. A quick swirl delivers classic brandy-type legging on the glass instead of the common foamy lace. Dark, tawny and murky- the ale is rustic and mysterious even to the eye.

Olfactory piercing aromas attack the nose with vengeance. Balsamic vinegar, black cherries, dates, figs, prunes, limes and red grapes all add to the tangy but dark, dried and aged fruit. Its leathery aroma invites other funky notes of sea air, weathered oak, cork, horse hair, musty attic wood and cellar-like pungency. Its a challenging vinous, tart and savory combination that's highly intimidating.

Its first sip zings right to the jowls and forces immediate mouthwatering sensations with its acute sourness. A mixture of balsamic and white wine vinegar is winy, acidic and highly fruity. A glimpse of fruit sweetness props up the sourness with all those dehydrated and stone fruits of the nose- its savory prune and date combination is the perfect complement to the black cherry, salty and umami rich and savory tones. Something akin to soy sauce leaps out and pulls the mature fruit and sourness together seamlessly. Its limey, briny, woody flavors finish the taste with a kiss of spiced dark rum.

The sourness pangs on the soft tissues of the mouth like a drum. As the mouth continues to water, the beer's jaw-stabbing astringency feels like splinters as the high alcohol warmth and the sheer acidity hammers away on the taste buds without apologies. That combination is palate-stripping as it leaves the mouth like dry vermouth.

There are very few glimpses that tell me that this beer is a Barleywine. But its sheer alcoholic power and thin sweetness is all that's left after that high sourness is done.

Thick and syrupy. Rather flat and unremarkable. Very little in the way of carbonation. Murky, Kind of nasty…

Lots of Cherry, lemon, vinegar. Lots of berry. Tart vanilla/barf /foot aroma.

Tarrrrt!!! Dry, nicely bitter, slightly metallic. Dead, missing any carbonation or life. Sweetness is even and quickly interrupted by quirky dryness. Not a lemon drop for sure. Lots of cherry and red apple. Rum is noticeable, but not promenade; it must have been an old barrel they used to infect…

Slightly a mess. Dry, unremarkably bitter and sour. Sourness is mixed with orange peel. Different. Not sure I recommend @ $10 for a 33cl. Glad I tried it, but not as sour as I would have liked. BdM is still king for the style.

Here's the problem. They list this as a Biere de Garde on the bottle. Um... not. If it is the aging in rum barrels has covered that and turned it far too dark. Hazy.

Don't get me wrong: this is a beautiful quaff if you're looking for a sweet rum beer but every other sense, whether Barleywine as listed here, Biere DG as listed on bottle, or Barley RYNE as also listed on the bottle are gone. None of the malt, or rye if that was in here or the often sweet, complex maltiness of a BW.

Can we also add that what style they wanted it to be is, perhaps intentionally, confusing. BDG and BW are very different?

I get rum sweet and hefty abv. Otherwise all masked. There's no "inteplay" other than between rum and sweet. Carbonation? Flat as hell. Hops? Nah.

Be interested in trying with without the rum, or at least less.

Oh good, my first flat infected beer. What the hell is up with so many reviewers noting how tart this is and giving it decent or better scores? Its a barleywine for crying out loud.

o: Absolute garbage. I was really excited to try this, I love the idea of partially barrel aged beer.

popped the swing top open and heard a slight fizz.. poured a murky brown with no head at all. smells of barley, rye, chocolate, and wood barrels.. wine/vinegar. ohai infection.. this tastes awful.. vinegar, wood, etc etc.. off putting bitterness reminiscent of burnt plastic/rubber. combine that with the flat body, and we have a drain pour.

you would figure a 10% barley wine would keep for at least 2 years, but not this one.. i did hear a while ago that most of this batch was infected, so i assume this is one of those bottles.. really sucks because this was not cheap whatsoever.

Served in a Duvel tulip glass.

It's been a little while since I've had a BFM beer, so I figured, what with Terrapin being involved (and considering I can no longer easily obtain their beers since moving back from the coast), I'd give this one a shot. It pours a clear ruby-auburn with no real head to speak of. Looks about as still as an aged wine. The nose comprises mild marmalade (something I just tried the other day, oddly enough), sweet caramel, a pinch of cinnamon, and a strong current of boozy vinegar. The taste is a wave of acetone and vinegar, each artificially flavored with Bertie Bott Jelly Belly flavors (you know, absurd things like bone, snot, and the like), rye bread, and vague fruits. I can't impart how objectionable this combination was upon first sip, but, believe you me, it was the closest I've been in a long time to having my own genuine spit take. Suffice it to say: it's muddled and awful. The body is a stolid medium, with a light carbonation and a slick-ish feel. Overall, this sounded like a good idea for a beer, but the execution proved quite the contrary. Something tells me the rum-barreling went awry, but, regardless of the true cause, this beer just tastes godawful.
