Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a very dark reddish brown, nearly opaque with absolutely no carbonation, totally flat. Aroma of red wine, tannins, dark dried fruit, darkly sour. Flavor of dark fruit, cherries, red wine tannins, wood, finishing with sour cherry, wine vinegar and a long unidentifiable bitterness. Warming alcohol is covered by the distinct flavors. Medium bodied, but lack of carbonation detracts from the mouth feel. I could detect no evidence at all of the underlying eisbock in this beer. It is similar in flavor to this brewery's Abbaye De Saint Bon-Chien, but a bit less complex and with an odd bitter, sour finish. Interesting, but rather too sour and vinous to resemble a bock beer. Biere de Garde and Flemish Red fans might like to give this a try. Unusual.

Served in a Duvel tulip glass.

Something tells me this beer will speak to me in a familiar language... It pours a bleak black-sienna topped by a slight wisp of glowing tan foam. The nose comprises sweet caramel, sherry, light fennel, and a twinge of plum. The taste is an explosion of sour hatred, an unholy collection of acetone, vinegar, tart sweat, bile, and musty, moldy wood. A touch of sweet toffee lies beneath, but it's quickly punched back into the burning water of malice. The body is a languid medium, with a light, almost nonexistent carbonation and an oily feel. Overall, I must just not get this beer. There's no real redeeming quality that I can find, only pain through and through. This is unlike any bock, eis- or otherwise, I could have imagined, somehow turning out more tannic than some harsh red wine. I am lost, bewildered, frightened, and violated. The horror...

Graciously gifted to me by Casey at Max's the other day.

The beer pours a muddy brown color with no head retention or lacing to speak. As is typical with many beers from BFM, this beer appears to be completely still. On the nose, there is so much going on it's amazing. The wine barrel and sour aroma dominates, but there's still considerable vanilla, grappa, gin, light chocolate, some sandlewood and a hint of cherry. The beer isn't quite as good on the palate, as the wine and sour flavor seems to dominate the flavor profile. Also, the beer came across as a bit thin, which is nothing short of shocking considering the abv. On the other hand, I was stunned to see the abv. (the label indicates it's 9.99%), as I got no sense that the alcohol was so high.

Another interesting beer from BFM, though it's hard to imagine drinking a whole lot this. Still, I'm a huge BFM fan, and it was an absolute treat to sample this beer.

Thanks Casey!!

Poured from 330mL swing-top bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: extremely dark brown, nearly black hue with very little light let through. There is no head upon pouring, which I don't love. Color is great though.

Smell: rich, dark fruits: raisins, dates and black cherries are all in the mix. It kind of reminds me of a very strong kvass. I like it quite a lot, actually.

Taste: shazam, this is a strong beer. Those rich dark fruits are all present, but with a surprising element of tartness in the works. Actually, this kind of reminds me of a Flanders-style kriek -- something I quite like indeed. Maybe not a normal eisbock, but a flavor I can really get behind.

Mouthfeel: moderately thick body with virtually no carbonation. It's OK, but really lacks a nice creaminess.

Overall: this beer's flavor was a big surprise to me. Although it has its faults, especially regarding texture, I quite enjoyed it.

Thanks to jmgrub for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with no head. No lacing on the drink down either. Smell is sour and tart with some dark fruit and nail polish remover aromas. Taste is much the same with a fruity flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with a flat and acidic mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some interesting aromas and flavors.

L - dark chocolate brown.

S - nail polish, blackberry brandy. This shit is serious.

T - more of the same. Tart cherry, dark fruits. Warheads. Not as sour as I was expecting but overall well-rounded. Sweet raisiny syrup.

F - prickly, but smooth in part to the 10%

O - wild beer! Sour, wheaty, slick, and syrupy. LOT going on.
