I had this beer on tap at the brewery. They toast a marshmallow on the glass and it is AMAZING. Bottle may be different, but on tap this is a great offering from a tiny brewer.

Appearance is standard but the presentation is incredible.

Taste is exactly like a campfire.

Feel is a great olfactory and taste experience. If you have the opportunity I suggest it

Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown appearing opaque in the glass, with a one finger light brown head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of sweet toasted malt, dark dried fruit, some fruit esters that does resemble marshmallows, hints of smoke. Flavor is light toasted malt, charred coffee and wood smoke with lighter fruit esters like the aroma, surprisingly similar to bubblegum. Light smoke. The malt body is very thin for a stout, more similar to a brown ale. Finishes with estery coffee and hop bitterness without notable hop herbal flavors. Medium bodied. This is an odd, but interesting dark ale, the body and flavor more similar to dark coffee ales than to stout. As an ale reminiscent of the outdoors and campfires it does a good job of integrating sweet marshmallow/mild chocolate flavors with charred coffee cooked over a wood fire. I'm not sure I'd get this again if I was in the mood for a stout, but it does have appeal as an idiosyncratic campfire dark ale. As with the other Base Camp beers, I'm calling this a bottle, although it really is a crown capped, bottle shaped aluminum can. I like the packaging.

22 oz aluminum bottle from "Lifesource" in Salem. $4.99 Handsome looking beer here..black,pitch black body and a lovely thick and creamy tan head. Aroma quite delicate, chocolate( milky) sweetness resembling marshmallow and toasted malts. Taste is much the same as the aroma with the addition of strong brewed coffee. Mouth feel is quite lively for the style and has a great bitter coffee after taste that lasts for ever or so it seems. Nice winter drink and nice bottle..need to find a top i can use this for a great camping water bottle.

Appearance- Pours up about two fingers' worth of head which has pretty good retention. The head is a medium beige while the body is a dark chocolate black that appears a tad paler when held up to the light. Considerable lacing that tends toward sheeting.

Nose- Not nearly as impressive as the label would suggest. No smoke, no figs as of yet. Light cocoa and small hints of cocoa. And a hint of caramel with little bubblegum notes. Swirling shows more bubblegum and a bit of creaminess.

Taste- Lots of cocoa that has a ton of coffee bitterness that moves to wood and sour roasted, notes. Some fruit- a little bit of raisins. Some smoke around the edges which really dry the mouth out. Smoke really sticks at the back of throat with the woody bitterness and some earwax notes. Lots of cherry and raisins. Some chocolate notes buried under the coffee bitterness. Pretty messy with many of the notes seeming to come in the wrong order. Some caramel, then bubblegum. Pretty much just an above average beer which fails to accomplish what it intended to do. Domineering bitterness and poignant sweetness make it hard to enjoy the other aspects of this beer.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with light carbonation and a little zing. Some grittiness, chalk.

Drinkability- The bitterness of this beer is an obstacle and I really wish there was more smoke to push up against it. 5 bucks for a bomber is very reasonable but I don't think I will be buying this beer again. No real heat is present.

Overall- Above average but I'm tempted to rate this as average. I would give it a try because it doesn't necessarily have flaws, just notes that I don't really enjoy. Would be nice if the concept actually worked out.

Served on tap into a tulip glass.

A- Poured black with off-white fluffy head that left webbed lace.

S- Chocolate, marshmallow, vanilla, roasted malt, and some smokiness.

T- Chocolate, roasted malt, marshmallow, vanilla, and a hint of smoke.

M- Medium body, smooth, soft carbonation, and dry.

O- A nice sweet stout with those s'more flavors that were advertised. The roasted malt and hint of smoke kept the sweetness in check and this was a very drinkable stout.

Thanks to Skuter for sharing this one at Retsinis' tasting.

Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and marshmallow aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and slight smoke flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with solid aromas. but the bitterness in the taste is a bit too much in my opinion.
