Poured from a sweet-ass 22oz metal bottle into a pint glass in high elevation Libby, Mont. Base Camp is a brand-new brewery, so I have no idea what to expect. Hopes are high. Reviewed live.

A- Three finger, hugely fluffy white head with massive bubbles. Relatively low retention. About a minute for the huge head to crunch down to floaters. Spotty off-white lacing. Ruby-red color with medium clarity. Alright looking beer.

S- Very odd. Chocolately malts and tropical fruits from the hops. Just an odd combination of scents. Despite the dichotomy of the brew, inviting and warm.

T- Hops are actually hidden under the roasted malts. It has the bitterness typical of the style, but presented in a way that stays both unobtrusive and uninteresting. Earthy hops, semi-sweet malts and pine.

M- Buttery, surprisingly heavy bodied. Nice feel. Well balanced.

O- Fairly good beer. Even better is the outdoorsy message of this new company. I'm a fan. I'll visit next time I'm in Portland.

From a 22oz metal bottle, one and half fingers of cork colored head. A hazy, copper colored body.
The smell of lemon and grapefruit.
The taste is interesting in a good way. Medium bitterness throughout with a short finish. Pretty mellow overall.
A little fizz in the texture. Moderate carbonation and medium body.
Great drinkability and from a metal bottle. Perfect for a camping trip.

Appearance: (4.0)

- Pours a pretty clear copper. A darker copper, much like a slightly hazed but still shiny new-like penny. This puppy has a nice light white and thick head that settles to a thin pillowy layer with lace all about the glass. Pretty solid and pretty pretty.

Smell: (4.5)

- This is what a beer should smell like. Nice resinous pine and fruity citrus hops burst in the nose. Kind of like that reminder of the first time you drank beer and you encountered hops for the first time. Crispy, spicy, and lightly sweet. Nice bready lager-like mix. Can't wait to sip...

Taste: (5.0)

- Damn. I love this beer. It's shocking crispness wakes the palate right up with a burst of saliva. Nice tart and dry lager notes. Not a touch over over-sweetness like what many ale's may leave behind. Is it just me, or are there not many hopped up lagers like this anywhere? I prefer this over most IPA's! Grassy herbal hops, pine, light citrus and fruit. Just a touch of bready sweet malt. I love how the lager yeast ate up most of the sweetness, and leaves a much cleaner taste. Huge marks for this one.

Mouth Feel: (4.5

- This is a nice full bodied brew. The carbonation is thickening, and the beer is quite dry and cloying. It is certainly a heavenly lager flowing over the tongue. I love the dryness, and that 'thirsty again' feel right after is impressive.

Overall: (4.5)

- Just when you think beers were maxed out towards perfection, this one came out and changed my mind all over again. For me this is setting the bar really really high for a fine craft lager. A must have for anybody. I am impressed, and plan on rounding up a ton more of this stuff. I am hoping they fill growlers at the source, because I may have to bring a few of my 20 to get filled.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a fine three finger white head with good rentention and lots of pillowy lacing. Aroma of grassy, slightly floral and piney hops, biscuit malt, apple juice and citrus. Flavor is unusual, with very upfront light citrus and light fruit with a summer woods fresh herbal and earthy component. Finishes with grassy hops and light citrus with a fresh herbal fruit flavor I just can't place but must be from one of the hops used. Medium bodied with some creaminess. I'm not able to parse out the flavors in this, but it is very refreshing and fun to drink, with well integrated hops and light malt and the fresh juiciness. This would taste really, really good at the end of a day hiking; cooled slightly in a stream. Nicely done. Really quite dark in color for a pale lager, but it looks good so no points off. Once again a crown topped metal "bottle", so it could be considered a can or bottle; definitely has the light protection of a can.
