Poured at Good Friend Beer Garden and Burger House at the Ay Dios Amigos event on 2/23/14. Served in a Lakewood pint glass, reviewed from notes. This is La Dam du Lac aged 9 months in a Magdalena Tequila barrel.
Appearance: Dark reddish amber, with a persistent one finger eggshell head. Not much lacing.
Smell: Very fruity in the way that belgian beers tend to be. Yeasty esters come through, and a prominent alcohol smell is evident as well. The nose foreshadows the tequila to come in the taste, but not overwhelmingly.
Taste: Loads of tequila. Loads of it. I've never had a barrel aged beer that made it so obvious what kind of barrels it was aged in. The biere de garde base was the perfect match for the tequila barrels, too. The fruity, malty sweetness of the base beer pair beautifully with the tequila, and the Belgian yeast is the perfect backbone. A slight alcohol burn that reminds me I'm dealing with tequila.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, creamy, and thick. Carbonation is on the high side.
Overall: Oh my god, this was amazing. I wish this were a regular release. Lakewood Brewing is again showing themselves to be the most creative brewer in North Texas, certainly in Dallas. Kudos on a job well done.
Serving type: on-tap
